Re: Aircraft that pitch down with flap extension

Change in pitching moment is due to the the increase of lift and center of center of pressure moving aft as the camber and wing area are changed. It's more pronounced with fowler flaps, obviously. A high wing airplane would pitch down, (because the arm between the center of lift of the wing and the ...

Re: Time to give up on LightSpeed

On another note, I tried out the Lightspeed in-the-ear headset (the "Mach 1") for the past couple of weeks. Sent it back. Felt and looked cheap and was uncomfortable to wear over the ear. Bought a Clarity Aloft instead even though it did not have as many aux features. I almost sent mine b...

Time to give up on LightSpeed

I just looked at the LightSpeed homepage and there is a picture of the Tron Guy on it. In case you haven't seen him before... http://www.tronguy.net. When I was growing up pilots were cool. They had strong hands and square jaws and they walked with a little swagger, no doubt because of their giant b...

Re: WD40 - It's Not Just For Breakfast Anymore...

There's an outfit in Houma, LA that flies DC-3s and -4s doing oil spill cleanup. http://www.airbornesupport.com/

I think they use Dawn as well, except it's called Exxon-Nalco Corexit 9527. Like airplane parts, you can charge more for it if it has a fancy name.

Re: 8.00-6 tire ply rating?

That's good to know. With my luck I'd get ramp checked by some smart SOB who had a 170 TCDS in his pocket. I've only found one 4-ply, and it cost a couple bucks more than the 6 ply. I think the 8.00x6 is what is used on the PA-23 Apache/Aztec, so that might explain why there are more options in the ...

Re: Survival hand gun or rifle Question

This "being escorted or badged in the AOA" goes back to before 9/11 and the TSA. Only now the TSA is getting nasty about it. At larger airports that had commercial service, you had to have a badge to access the AOA, or Air Operations Area. The airport police would enforce it, but access co...

There is also a rumor that it is a effective contraceptive when properly applied. I have no difinative inforation on proper application. Maybe a shot behind each ear. I know my wife doesn't want to have anything to do with me when I come home smelling, as she puts it, "Like old airplanes."...

Re: 8.00-6 tire ply rating?

Technically isn't the 4 ply the only one that can be used without a field approval since it's specifically listed in the TCDS? Also, if you were too cheap to buy bushwheels and didn't really have any intention of landing on big rocks, but gravel bars or other unimproved strips weren't out of the que...

Re: Flight Restrictions, Dallas TX. (GW Bush residence?)

What I meant was, you get ATC to vector you out there on a wide downwind for 13L. Maybe they need to check their low altitude alert system or something...heck, even at 1100 feet, a straight pipe Lear will rattle your windows. A friend of mine was telling me about a little sleepy private strip East o...

Re: Time for an Overhaul

(Hint: There is no such thing as a "pre-buy" inspection. There are only Annual Inspections.) And some of us think we're being real smart by paying to have the plane annualed in lieu of a "prebuy" (whatever that is) since it's spelled out very clearly what needs to be accomplishe...

Re: Flight Restrictions, Dallas TX. (GW Bush residence?)

What's missing from the text above is the part that says "Without ATC permission". Not that you aren't always at 3000 feet on downwind at DAL anyway, but hypothetically, if one happened to have a controller friend and access to a Lear 25...

Re: Time for an Overhaul

I don't remember all the differences, but I think the O-300D has an accessory pad for a vacuum pump. Mattituck wants $24,500 to overhaul one. Cores are pretty cheap, though. I've seen a couple of yellow tagged cores for under $4K. If it were me, I would probably go the O-360 route. Although I'd hate...

Here's a review of the Spot: http://www.equipped.org/SPOT_ORSummer2007.htm Also, Doug Ritter on www.Equipped.org has TONS of information on various survival products including some PLB reviews. SPOT is a GPS tracking device. It is similar to what is used on trucks or shipping containers by logistics...

Re: Survival hand gun or rifle Question

...OBTW I don't see the possession of a weapon in the cockpit as mattering one bit to any FAA inspector. No, but one in-the-hand definitely speeds up their inspection! I did a BFR for a cop who told me that while he was sitting on the ramp with the engine idling, the FAA man came up from behi...

Re: Class D / E / G / TSRA

I was hoping to find some sort of geographical boundries of the FSS's, but I couldn't even find a map of them. I have a map of the Flight Watch stations (it's on the back of the A/FD).

As for the moose knuckle, well you'll just have to google that. And don't say I didn't warn you.
