Re: C-170A Airforms Baffle kit on a C145-2H?

My engine is C-145-2H and recently installed new Airforms front baffle pieces. Fit was pretty straightforward. Just had to do a little trimming to get around the armature. As a matter of fact, both front pieces needed some trimming to get a perfect fit (there is bolt that protrudes on the right side...

CA Sep 29-Oct 1 North/South Fly-In Columbia Airport (O22)

It’s time for another North/South Fly-In at Columbia Airport! Bring your families and friends (and 170s, of course) and enjoy the excellent campground with restrooms, showers and electrical outlets. If camping is not your thing, there are also hotels nearby. We will have a group dinner in town at El...

Re: Photo Album

I recently finished some work (overhauled alternator, new mufflers, new Mueller Exhaust STC, etc…) and had a chance to fly the 170 to work, so…why not? The FBO that houses the jet I fly was nice enough to let me park her in a nearby hangar during my trip. I love the contrast of the sleek, powerful j...

Re: Muffler Shroud

I got it figured out. Ended up tightening the screws along the top of the shroud, loosening them up and then working the shroud upwards while squeezing the top. By tightening the screws, the shroud was able to push against the flanges and slightly form (or deform-depends on your post of view) around...

Muffler Shroud

Installing new mufflers on my 170B SN 26754 and have run across some issues fitting the shroud to the muffler. The shroud pieces are Hanson Wilson (they look pretty original-rough, but serviceable) IPC Fig 51, items 45 and 47. The problem appears to be the flanges welded onto the upper exhaust tubes...

Re: 0300A - inspecting lifters?

I cannot comment on lifter condition inspection since my oil analysis and filter inspections have not alarmed me enough to do so. I did replace all the pushrod tubes with Real Gaskets kits during the last annual. The modification allows some access to the lifters and cam after the original pushrod t...

Re: 170B fatal accident today

I collaborated with the NTSB investigator on the Auburn, CA 170 B accident and we jointly wrote an article for the association magazine. We speculated that the pilot may have slipped on final with full flaps and experienced a sudden downward pitch. We again speculated that he responded with abrupt ...

Re: Throttle Linkage?

I was at the hangar today and remembered you were looking for photos/info about the throttle cable bracket. My cowling isn’t removed so the pics shown are the best of the bunch (sorry about the finger in frame). I hope this is what you were looking for and that it helps you out.

Re: F&M Oil adapter slippage and leakage

I just wanted to point out that the outer portion of the filter adapter is a sleeve that is held in place by friction between the crush gaskets and sleeve. It is important to note that the adapter sleeve can be moved either direction without tightening or loosening the nut…any movement simply breaks...

Re: Re-weighed the plane today

Just out of curiosity, what was the difference between your previous w&b and the new one?

My STC/changes list isn’t as extensive as yours but I still wonder what the actual weight of my plane is. I’ve been considering re-weighing when the list is complete.

Re: Approved Seat rail stops

Another good point is that the passenger seat is capable of sliding aft as well. If this happens during takeoff/climb they may be inclined to grab the yoke to arrest their rearward travel. A friend suggested having them hold onto the entry handle on the door post during takeoff (at last they are alr...

Re: EGT setup

I don’t have an answer for you but have noticed some single-EGT installation instructions recommend installing the probe at the cylinder that is leanest during climb. My personal experience with a 6-cylinder monitor in my 170B (with C145) is that the #2 is the leanest cylinder (by far) at full power...

Re: Vibration problem

I had a couple instances of stuck valve symptoms at different times. Each time, the engine sounded rough at startup and my engine monitor confirmed which cylinder wasn’t producing heat. Upon inspection, the valves were in good condition and the guides were clean and right at spec. I had a new set of...

Thanks for taking the time to post all these photos, Doug. I missed this year but looking forward to parking next to some of these beautiful planes next year.
