Re: Battery

While that's a good philosophy, and a valid one to consider and keep in mind, how many airplanes are out there that have no starter and must be hand propped? I realize our 170s don't necessarily fall into this category, but it begs another question: How many fly hard IFR or extensive night IMC? Whil...

(OK...being troublesome here now..but the virus is adding to boredom...). Soo... I have to buy his book to understand what we already know? Clearly you didn't know that blow-by increases temperatures and hot spots and adds to problems within the cylinders. :D It’s my opinion the differences o...

Re: CHT Gauge Limit Settings

Blow-by (as I understand the implied definition of gasses escaping past rings during a combustion-event)... if “blow-by” occurs.... it occurs throughout the power-cycle, ...all along the piston’s travel....which is while pressure from the combustion is higher above the piston than below. Why would ...

Re: CHT Gauge Limit Settings

It is unclear to me how and why that would adversely affect the “sealing ring” on the outside of the head/barrel joint, especially as blow-by occurs in a rapidly-downward-moving piston. I don’t see it. He talks about improperly broken in cylinders with glazed walls. Higher blow-by absolutely will i...

Re: 180 horse prop comparison video

I downloaded this file from Flight Resource page. It's a comparison of a couple MT props, the original HC prop, and the Trailblazer. This is a sales pitch sort of pamphlet, so the ever so slight edge given to the MT in every category may be suspect. I've heard from others that there's not much diffe...

Re: 170A Engine Modification STCs

I've been talking with Chris as Del-Air the past several months. He can be slow to get back to you at times, but he will get back to you. Try to call between 0800-0900 California time - that's the best chance to get him it seems. He offers several other STC that complement the engine upgrade (batter...

Re: Engine Upgrade Availability

The IO360 Continental STC is about $32K just for the STC The IO360 Lycoming STC is about $15K, but uses a newer M1A or M1B engine that are more difficult to find used - new ones are about $32K plus a prop The O360 Lycoming STC is about $15K, but uses the A1A or A1D that are more readily available I ...

Re: Cessna 170B Checklist

[ Even when doing failure mode analysis in the rocket engine testing world we dismissed the probability of dual simultaneous failures as too remote to worry about. (And the consequences of a rocket motor failure are way more dire than not being able to shut down an airplane engine.) We call that a ...

Re: Carbon Monoxide Detector

(And keep in mind that, while a Sentry might be considered a permanent installation.... it’s CO detection lifetime is limited. CO detectors mfr’d since 2013 are generally expected to be useful for ten years, while earlier ones are not.) Sentry was not purchased as a CO detector - I merely mentioned...

I have the Sentry ADS-B IN that has a built-in CO monitor as well. I didn't get it for that, but it's a great feature to have.
