Re: Cowlings needed for 1954 170B
I've seen a number of 170 cowlings that were both 'beyond repair' and still in service. I am somewhat surprised that there still isn't an approved faithful replica available in carbon or glass. I visited with a company at Oshkosh about nose-bowls upper/lower and they took scans of my ‘53…for the pu...

The 1958-59 Endurance Flight
A bit more information on that Hacienda endurance flight than I’ve known previously…. I didn’t know they dealt with oil changes in-flight… nor that the pilot was a WW2 bomber-pilot turned slot-machine mechanic.

Re: Aero VS Auto Engine
The “valve train” comment was a simplified description of failed hydraulic lifters (due to internal coolant leaks which created “sludge” that contaminated the lifters.) It was not over-revved… the car was not raced…it was reasonably-driven mostly “in town”….the model was what you likely call an “est...

Re: History of a gear collapse
The Cessna 170 was originally produced with hollow aluminum axles to save weight. Those axles were prone to cracking where the machining leftstress-risers…so the axles were redesigned with a heavier base area…but those axles also could fail. Cessna produced some solid-aluminum axles (called “ski” ax...

Aero VS Auto Engine
It’s a common discussion…comparing auto engines and aero engines… The auto engines supposedly are “hardier” in the minds of many. But my O-300 was majored in the early ‘80s…but not put into service until ‘97. 25 years later it now has almost 1200 hrs….. at 100mph that would be about 120K miles. Our ...

How the Internet Saved Me….
There are some Real Junk sites on the Internet… (and I HATE…I HATE…I HATE those guys who spend ten minutes standing in front of the camera hemming and hawwing and telling us all about nothing…then producing a JUNK video ….with no real info … …. but every once in a while …there’s a gold-mine: I was m...

Joe, I know how you use your ‘plane and I trust and respect your opinion greatly… but glide-ratio Doubled..? Is there any empirical evidence in that regard? That would be a real game-changer.

Re: Slooooooow 170b
I agree that failing to record maintenance is serious, especially for unsuspecting persons who may end up with an improperly modified aircraft and be totally unaware. I also don’t argue with FAA inspectors or other aviation professionals who have opinions and positions based on their years of exper...

Re: 1952 cessna 170B Ring bearing retainer
Henry… what wheel do you have? The original wheels for this airplane were Goodyear… but most of 170s today have Clevelands. (There are some likely still running on Goodyear and a few also with McCauley. McCauley eventually became a Cessna-owned product-line and are similar to Cleveland.) The IPC (Il...

Re: One more trip with my 170B ?
Not to be “too critical”…..but if you are ..”without having hundreds of hours of experience with a Cessna wing…” How can you believe your comparison of the STOL Kit your airplane has…. can compare to the unmodified airplane…?…. Especially with an Aftermarket Engine … AND Aftermarket Propeller..?? Th...

Re: History of a gear collapse
Cessnut said it. If “…. flexing floor boards under the seats when the either wing is lifted up or dow…”. is observed…. Yes.. THAT would be a problem. :? It sounds as-if you are considering purchasing this airplane. If so, then Only a Full Annual Inspection by an inspector familiar with single-engine...

Re: Slooooooow 170b
Your post brought a smile to my face. I thought my 170 was the slowest around. It gets around 108 mph true…and the plane is even painted RED! … It’s good that it’s RED!…. I’d hate to think of how slow it might be in Green! More seriously, one of the things which perturbed me was the amoun...

Re: Slooooooow 170b
Individual FAA Inspectors are “human”…just like owners, pilots, and workmen. They can make and verbalize personal observations in conversations which may or may not be the “official” viewpoint. “More onerous” was My phrase in boiling-down the bottom line of the conversation. The inspectors comments ...
