Re: Spins in old airplanes (split topic)

Exactly! That's why I got the best spin instructor I could find to teach me (lots of!) spins before I got my CFI Rating. Aerobatic champ and FAA DPE Gene Beggs from Midland, Texas who did exhaustive spin testing in the 1970s in a Pitts S-1 he built, taught me spins in my 170A and gave me my CFI Rati...

Re: AOPA Sweepstakes aircraft: Cessna 170B

I find the rudder very effective. Considering it’s the same one on C-190/ 195s, of considerably more horsepower, perhaps it’s a little too much. I note that the -170C was to have had a smaller one. Same rudder but the 195 it has a longer fuselage - a longer lever - by 3 feet or so... I have never f...

Re: Very informal study of 170 sales.

They wasted waaay too much duct tape on that repair! It would have flown with 1/4 of that tape!

Re: Very informal study of 170 sales.

No, I haven't. Mine was freshly restored with a rebuilt engine when I bought it in 1973 for $7,500. I bought it back from a friend in 2006 for $12,500, what I sold it for in 1984 but nothing had been done to it since I sold it to him. I would be lucky to sell it today for what I have in it, just cou...

OK, I'll ask, how did you do it?

Re: Black stuff on inside walls of fuselage

And according to Del Lehmann at Mountain Airframe in Mena, the black stuff is insoluble in just about everything. He tried every solvent he had and was not able to dissolve it on my plane. We finally gave up and primered-over it since the little bit they mechanically removed had no corrosion underne...

Re: Tachometer inop / irregular

Remove the cable from the plane and if possible, pull the retainer clip, and pull the inner wire-wound drive cable out. Clean it up and check for any broken or worn-thru wire. If you find something wrong, buy a new cable, but if you find nothing there, then lube and reinstall and check the operation...

Re: IOWA'S 170

I really don't need anything fancy Was thinking about using the GTR 200 comm only Dave Dave- The GTR200 is not TSO'd and is for experimental aircraft. It can be approved for certified aircraft if used with certain other Garmin avionics, maybe it can be with the GNC355, you might want to check if yo...

Re: IOWA'S 170

Dave- Nice looking radio! I always turn off the radio/avionics master and usually don't turn individual radios on and off. I never turn the radio/avionics master back on until after engine start, the charging circuit shows positive charge, and the amps are decreasing. p.s. I still keep my old Garmin...

Re: Tachometer inop / irregular

Sounds like your tach cable is hanging up in the housing, winding up, and then letting go, making the needle jerk. The cable may be worn out or just needing a good clean and lube. I would check the cable first.

Re: June, 2022 Texas Fly-in?

It has been decided we will be eating lunch at Nacho's Cafe in Mason, TX meeting there at 11:45 on Saturday June 4, 2022. Nacho's is on the NW side of Mason going out of town on Hwy 87 toward Brady. If anyone is driving, we'll meet you there. A rancher friend has invited John and I to land at his 18...

Re: June, 2022 Texas Fly-in?

Thanks guys, I forgot about the convention. John Klaerner and I are going to meet for lunch someplace, either in Fredericksburg, T82 or some other airport. Llano is always a good choice for Cooper's BBQ. If anyone is interested in meeting for lunch, let me know before Saturday and we'll make final p...

Does anyone know if there will be a June 4, 2022 Fly-in/Lunch in Texas?
