Re: Installing BAS Tail Pull Handles

What fuselage station did you use for the tail handle W&B adjustment?

Re: Installing BAS Tail Pull Handles

I just installed the BAS pull handle last annual. I began the project “working downhill” but quickly abandoned that effort and got the tail level with the ground. I needed to rebuild the tailwheel assembly anyway. I just stuffed a bunch of towels down in the tail and found myself favoring one side o...

Re: Insurance

Anyone have updated insurance premium numbers to share? I just got quoted $2935/yr. with a 60k hull value, $1,000,000/$100,000 liability, and $1,000 deductible, up 23% from last year. I’ll have a few more quotes coming in as I approach my renewal date in January.

Re: Interior Refresh

I just installed the Airtex baggage compartment in my 170B. It wasn't quite as straightforward as i'd hoped, so here's the play-by-play: 1) Just like any of the other interior pieces, taking your time to prep the underlying surface and install the included foam installation took a majority of my tim...

Re: Interior Refresh

I'm half way through the Airtex headliner installation and wanted to add a few discussion items to this thread. Like Brian said, it is a major PITA. Despite Airtex's recommendation, I went with the vinyl headliner. As previously discussed, the fabric options have some ability to shrink, while the vi...

Re: Restoration for resale

Ben, First off, thanks for taking on the task of preserving such an iconic and classic airplane. It sounds like you have put a lot of time and effort into the project. I would sell everything as-is. As someone who wants to undertake a restoration project someday, the though of finding a plane like y...

Re: F&M Oil filter adapter AND THREAD DRIFT-LOL

I'm in the middle of my annual and just competed the modification outlined in the service bulletin. So. Much. Safety wire. Of course, I only had about 10 hours since my last oil change, so dumping 7 quarts down the drain was a ton of fun. Thankfully, gas and oil is "cheap," or so they tell...

Re: Surefly mags

The guy across the taxiway installed a Surefly SIM on his Grumman recently, with the variable timing option. Early reports talk about easier starts and more power. I'm pretty confident the "more power" claim is anecdotal, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was in fact true. The kicker was t...

Re: Interior Refresh

Thanks for the intel. I pulled the parts off the airplane, did some corrosion treatment, and applied zinc chromate. Fortunately, things weren't as bad as they seemed initially. If I need a part, I will certainly get in touch with mschlender.

Re: Interior Refresh

I thought my plane was in pretty good shape until I started the process of removing my old headliner. There's evidence of past water incursion and nesting rodents. Unfortunately, about 50% of the metal headliner retainer assembly is corroded beyond serviceable repair. 170B IPC Figure 18, #41. Does a...

Re: Sudden Engine Vibration

After trying to diagnose some intermittent engine roughness, I finally found the culprit. Long story short, I had an exhaust valve stick open and tried the rope trick to no avail. The valve was STUCK HARD! This led me to pull the offending cylinder and replace it with a new jug (old cylinder was out...
