Re: Required instruments under CAR3 for 55 170B
1) CAR 3 still governs the requirements for our planes. 2) No, item 607 is only the stall warning kit and it is still a required piece of equipment. The 1954 equipment list showing the installed equipment was used to determine what was in the plane when it was weighed. It doesn’t have anything to du...

EA48073A-57E0-422A-AA1A-6124559E433E.jpeg In addition to my electric heater in my cowl, I have this little heater on the floor of the cockpit. I angle it upward to blow air towards the panel. Not only do the instruments warm but but the canopy and interior warm up as well. It works very well and I ...

Re: Voltage regulator
Here is my very short take: Generators: Pretty reliable proven design and easy to service. If you run down the battery somewhere by leaving the master on, you can hand prop it and the generator will produce a charge. (That’s not the easiest procedure on the battery or conducive to long battery life ...

This is a copy of my 337 which may answer some of these questions.
When I installed mine, the TailBeacon unit was only .1oz heavier than the Grimes light that came off.

ADS-B rebate may still be available (if you’re lucky)
If you go to the FAA’s ADS-B rebate page, you will get the following message! “The last of the ADS-B rebates have been reserved! Still looking for a rebate? Read more below on how you may still be able to reserve a rebate.” However, do not give up! What has happened is that all the rebate money has ...

Re: Method Put Air in Tire Scott 3200
Another vote for valve extenders. Buy the cheap black plastic ones at an auto parts place. They look like the ones below but they’re plastic. I keep several in the glove box of the plane and the car because I keep losing them or lending them out. Proper tail wheel tire inflation is important for long...

Re: Headset Jacks
Bill, Before flying yesterday, I moved the ailerons stop to stop while I had my ear very close to the jack to see if there was any sound which would indicate chafing by the aileron cable on the jack or wiring. I could hear none. I will pull that channel cover during the annual and let you know if I ...

Re: Headset Jacks
Bill, I have not noticed any problems yet (23 years of ownership) and I can hear no rubbing when the ailerons move. I did replace the aileron cables about 10 years ago and there was no problem apparent to my mechanic. However, I will try to examine the jack and the cables and let you know if I see a...

17CE48B5-A07B-4766-8246-110B495E7E90.jpeg After more than 20 years of polishing, I finally threw in the towel and had my 170 painted to achieve the look of an aluminum plane with paint. What pushed me over the edge was an explosion of corrosion. The plane had been fine here for years but two years ...

Re: which oil 0-300 D 1580 hrs
The other thing to consider is whether to think about regular oil analysis at oil change. At 1,580 hours, your engine is approaching the end of life. Sometimes when engines get old, rings get worn, they just burn more oil, leak more, and produce less power but do not present the threat of catastroph...

Re: which oil 0-300 D 1580 hrs
This is a much discussed thread so I will try to abbreviate... There are some good discussions here if you search around. The answer is .... it depends. And it depends somewhat on how often you fly and how long you fly when you do. In some uses, the biggest threat comes from internal corrosion durin...

Re: Operations Manual for C 170
Samples of a 1956 Owner’s Manual and an Airplane Flight Manual for a 170 are found in the members only section of this website. The booklet you describe is likely the Owner’s Manual. For my 1953B, the Owners Manual is 79 pages and covers all aspects of operation and very basic maintenance. It’s nice...

My Icom hand held cigarette lighter charger has a fuse in the plug. That can be readily disassembled, inspected and replaced if necessary. My brick wall charger has no readily observeable fuse. Which charger are you using?
