George the GI-275 is certified to replace the Analog Airspeed Indicator and Altimeter, just like in a fancy jet. I left my steam gauges in for redundancy and to maintain a classic panel look as best I could.

Re: What did you buy for your 170 today?
Jim: hope you enjoy the new panel. I flew IFR from Aurora, IL to Ottumwa, IA yesterday. It was the perfect day for a 170 with the upgrades. 2,500’ BKN- OVC enroute, SKC above. Marginal to fly VFR, but I was on top at 6,000’.
Good luck with the IFR training!

Re: Is a 6 Cylinder Engine Monitor Overkill on a O-300A
I read his columns sometimes and give his thoughts as much consideration as I give any other writer. Sometimes thought provoking, sometimes full of b.s. The only opinion I personally have on precise mixture control/ EGT monitoring is that fuel injected engines with tuned systems may benefit from pro...

Re: Engine Making Metal - Suggestions?
Sump had a bit of corrosion, but my AME said it wasn't too bad. It's back on the plane now anyway. Out of curiosity—what's a coating/repair cost? What's a new sump cost these days? New sumps are made from unobtainium. Old sumps were made from magnesium. Here’s a thread discussing the coating proces...

Re: 121.5/246 ELTs vx 406 mHz
I'm with Jim. While I don't fly in remote areas, if the ELT saves time in an injury accident, to me, it's worth the cost. When I installed my new IFR avionics the shop said it was possible to have the GPS send position info to the ELT, for additional installation cost of course. I paid the money. Ho...

One of the limitations of our current Message Board is it can’t accept large files, such as pictures. *Most of the time* if you email the picture to yourself, your email applications will “downsize it” enough that it then can be uploaded to the Message Board. YMMV

Re: Insurance
My insurance is due for renewal. Since I installed new avionics this year, and because asking prices for the few available 170s are quite high, I wanted to increase my Hull Value. I asked to increase to $73k. Butler Brown told me their Underwriter would only increase it to $60k because of “Blue Book...

resize.jpg Or you could use a door handle clip removal tool... That tool won't work on these handles. It will on the early handles. The tool relies on the ends of the clips protruding so the tool can catch and then and push the clip out. As I said this handle does not allow the clip to protrude out...

Re: Flying Magazine: "Approachable Aircraft: Cessna 170"
I love my airplane and am glad I got it. On days with strong crosswinds it would nice to have a 172, but most days would be bored with one. Like Brian, I couldn’t afford one at today’s prices.
