Re: Vor V-Shaped Tail Antenna Physics
Dave F, Thank you. I looked closer at the Balun that came with my plane and that I duplicated and you are right. The voltage does get doubled and that changes the impedance by a factor of 4 (Bummer). I might have been better off not using one at all. With all of the trouble I went through taking the...

Re: Vor V-Shaped Tail Antenna Physics
Gary, I'll try to explain. As mentioned in the beginning of this message stream, the the purpose of the Balun is to help electrically match the antenna (which is a balance load because both sides are the same) to the coax cable (which is not a balanced load). The name "Balun" is the two wo...

Re: Vor V-Shaped Tail Antenna Physics
Thanks to all, I got the VOR antenna fixed. I had to take off the rudder and then take off the Vertical stabilizer cap. I found the Balun's weight was hanging off of the antenna connection and after all the years it fatigued and broke off. So nothing was connected to the antennas. I made a new Balun...

Re: Vor V-Shaped Tail Antenna Physics
Dave,
Good idea about the pictures. Silly me assumed all the 170's from the factory had the same VOR antenna installed. However, I tried to attach a photo but I could not get it to work. I know it can be done, I just need to know how.
Thanks
Jim

Re: Vor V-Shaped Tail Antenna Physics
Wow, This is turning into a lively conversation. Thanks for the information on Baluns. When you go through the books on the subject (which I did), you find that there are many different types of Baluns and matching networks. Some baluns introduce a DC short and some don't. Also there are some Gamma ...

Re: Vor V-Shaped Tail Antenna Physics
Dave, Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately I am still confused. At DC there is a short between shield and center conductor and the 1/4 wave stub idea would still be open at DC. So I still think it is some kind of gamma match (which can go from unbalanced antenna to balanced line which is done all ...

Vor V-Shaped Tail Antenna Physics
Hello All, I have a question that I need the exact answer to. In measuring my VOR antenna at the end of the coax inside the instrument panel, I find it is not working too well at all. Which accounts for the VOR's very short range. I am an electrical engineer and I have the equipment to do these meas...

Re: Central Fuel Vent on 1952 C170B
Hey All, The Chicago land weather finally let me work on my airplane this weekend and among other things, I got my vent problem fixed. If you read all the posts on this message thread, you may remember my left tank was plugged in 2 places. One was that the fuel cap was built with too much thread loc...

Re: Central Fuel Vent on 1952 C170B
Gahorn, As I have commented on before, everyone on this site has been very helpful. Thank you. Without a doubt, no question about it, 100%, I had a situation where the left tank had no way to vent at all. I could not move any air (in or out) of the gas cap. Found it plugged with thread locker. I the...

Re: Central Fuel Vent on 1952 C170B
Thanks Gene, Everybody on this site is very helpful. I ordered some of the hoses you recommended from Aircraft Spruce and it said that the hoses where for air & vacuum and did not mention being fuel prof. I just wanted to make sure your hoses did not turn into a sticky mess over time and that th...

Central Fuel Vent on 1952 C170B
Hi All, I have a simple question to ask but a long story to get to this question. I just bought my C170B (N2488D) and had to fly it from South Carolina to northern Illinois. Just as I was over the top of the smoky mountains, I noticed that the left tank was still full and the right tank was getting ...
