Re: Landing Gear Clunk/Lifting Plane

I’m very interested in seeing how you decide to raise the plane. There seems to be a few different ways to do it. I have a similar problem but haven’t attacked it yet…kinda worried about the jacking part. You may have already found it, but there is a great explanation in the Forum about landing gear...

Re: New Muffler Problems?

I recently did some minor exhaust repairs involving a small amount of stainless steel foil. I located some through Grainger Industrial Supply. It was not cheap-about $50 for the roll but it should last me and everyone I know a few lifetimes of exhaust repairs. I notice you are Canada so it would pro...

I happened upon this recent account of an engine failure on takeoff and subsequent turn back to the airport…

Re: The Turn Back to the Airport after engine Failure

It is important to note that the classic "turn back to the airport" does not involve a simple 180. Instead, it requires a turn of approximately 225 degrees followed by a turn in the opposite direction of approximately 45 degrees in an attempt to line up with the runway. All the while avoid...

Re: New products for windscreens

Thanks for the recommendation! I am pretty fanatical about maintaining windshields and windows. I have tried several products and have found some winners. Aero Cosmetics PlexAll and McFarlane’s D.A.M. Window Cleaner have both done an excellent job of removing bugs and leaving the surface clean and p...

Re: Exhaust Gaskets

I meant to show pics (before and after) of how well the brush attachment on the Dremel worked, just in case anyone else runs into this problem. There is very little chance of damaging anything yet the brush cleaned the RTV off very effectively. I took extra care to make sure any residue was removed ...

Re: Cylinder Issues

Thanks again, guys. Your responses alleviated my concerns that I was missing something with the springs. I ordered a set of springs from Fresno Air Parts and confirmed the part numbers are correct. The “shorter” spring set that I removed from the cylinder may just be compressed from time in service....

Re: Cylinder Issues

My mechanic and I checked the intake and exhaust valves on cylinder #5 today. They are in excellent shape. The exhaust valve guide had almost no carbon and the valve stem looked good as well. In guide clearance was well within limits. Both seated well. I replaced the springs and put it all back toge...

Re: Cylinder Issues

A repeatable problem with a cylinder not firing at idle and starting to fire at run-up sounds like an intake leak of some sort to me. I was sure the problem was intake related after watching the valves move and seat properly. My mechanic was pretty sure of it as well. After removing the intake atta...

Re: Cylinder Issues

Thanks for the replies and for backing up my troubleshooting. I did a very thorough inspection of the cylinder with my borescope a few days ago. Wanted to be sure the valve and piston hadn't connected. Everything looked good in there. Didn't see any evidence of scoring or other damage. My mechanic a...

Cylinder Issues

After completing the exhaust reinstallation, I started up the engine and immediately noticed engine roughness. Cylinder #5 (on my engine monitor) was not making heat (EGT and CHT). I shut down and pulled the spark plug from #5 and stuck my borescope in there. Both valves appeared to moved freely and...

Re: Exhaust Gaskets

I tried the Dremel tool idea and was able to remove the RTV very effectively from the exhaust ports. It was more like dental work than exhaust maintenance. Much quicker and effective than using solvents. Had to wrap the Dremel chuck with tape to keep from scratching up pushrod tubes, etc. Ordered so...

Re: Exhaust Gaskets

Thanks for the info, George. Your recommendation of the wire wheel gave me an idea. I have a Dremel with a flexible extension and a small, nylon brush wheel. It should be gentle enough to avoid scratching yet aggressive enough to pick away at the RTV a little better. If it doesn’t work, then I’m bac...
