control column length/ AVION instrument panel

Gary, I have done a couple DELAIR center stack panels however I am not familiar with the Avion setup. The DELAIR uses splices the upper portion of a donor C172 U column to the bottom 5 inches of the stock C170 column. This allows the portion of the column from the pivot point to the elevator push ro...

C170 Seat upgrade

I have installed 1974 C172 articulating seats in my 1952 C170B. George is correct in that you need to remove the rear seat to install the front seats that is without removing the roller brackets as previously mentioned. On my aircraft the lower seat frame that surrounds the bottom seat cushion hits ...

Upolstery" fun question

Just a thought but are there ashtrays installed in the aircraft? If not then I think it needs the "No Smoking" placards.

George, Maybe I missed somthing in this discussion, but how would increasing the pressure in the cylinder blow open the valves? I would think it would seat them tighter. I am not sure but would not the cylinder pressure during combustion be quite a bit higher than 1000 to 2000 PSI. Would you happen ...

Installing a Baggage Door in my 170A

Maybe someone has mentioned this before but DEL-AIR has a baggage door STC for the C170A and B. STC # SA3547NM. I have installed a baggage door in my C170B using this STC and a donor C172 baggage door assembly. You will need the door and the surrounding structure (door seal frame, upper header, bott...

Tailwheel steering

John, I personally do not think compression springs are a good idea for exactly the reason you stated. I know of two people that have tried to use them and both had the same results - a bent rudder horn. When the compression springs reach their limit they transfer all of the azimuth shock and loads ...

Rope Trick Woes

Bill, Sorry to hear about the lifter episode. Unfortunately I know of at least three cases of this happening. Two of the instances were a surprise to the people involved but the third one happened to someone that knew of the problem. This shows how easy it is for this to happen. If the lifters are o...

You might check with the 190/195 club. I believe there is one available for the 195. It may be longer than required for the 170 but I think it can be cut to length. The one I saw was molded to fit the curved leading edge. It also had a thicker leading edge for additional cushion. Installation would ...

Replacing Seats?

George, You are correct about the seats hitting the fwd door post. I remove my rear seat and then the front seats slide off the track to the rear. A little more work but it has been worth it given the adjustability of the articulating seats. It seems most mods have some sort of compromise.

Replacing Seats?

About 15 years ago I replaced my original Cessna 170 front seats with 1974 Cessna 172 articulating front seats. Should be a simple task given the seat frames fit the C170 seat track, right? Well as in any retrofit endeavor a few obstacles appeared. First, the seat frame hit the fuel selector bezel. ...

Eric, Sorry I did not see this post until today. I must have missed it as I thought it was an old one. The tailwheel conversion my friend is doing was STC'd by a man named Fravel. His son is selling the STC. I believe he is lives in the southeast. If you are interested I will try and find his addres...

170B Left Main Landing Gear

Just a heads up, I have been helping a friend of mine convert a 1956 172 to conventional gear. We used the PPonk gear attach fittings. The slot in the outboard gear fitting appeared to be taller than my 170B. Additional shims (or custom made) shims were required to obtain proper gear leg clamp up. W...

Sealed Lead Acid Battery

John, I know of someone that has been running a Concorde SLA in a C170 in Arizona since 01/96 and he just replaced it. That is a pretty good for any battery here in Arizona. However at that time of installation he had to get a field approval. I do not know if they are STC'd now. Currently I am insta...

Mike, Currently I' am installing a center stack instrument panel and "U" control column in my C170B. Harry at DEL-AIR has an STC for a center stack panel. He modifies the original 170 control column by using the top half of a later Cessna "U" shaped 172 control column. I purchase...
