You are correct. But I wonder how I saw this in the past if I don't have access to the thread.n2582d wrote:George addressed it here. In my opinion, the cost of membership more than pays for itself with access to this post of his alone. It could be a lifesaver.

Control Column Crack
I have been searching for the thread about a crack at a drain hole on the lower end of the control column, (control tee) just above the point it connects to the elevator push-pull rod. Fig. 26, in the 170A parts manual. Fig. 61, in the 170B parts manual. Can someone point me to that thread? I would ...

Re: Cargo net tie down rings
So, if one wanted to install tie-down rings, wouldn't they have to be at least as big (1/4-28) as the hardware shown in the IPB, and be of similar design?

I'm always willing to learn, so point me in the right direction. I've been working on aircraft for 37 years (mostly military, some GA) and have never come across this method, making the nut thinner by any amount, to adjust a nut's cotter pin alignment. Adding or taking away washers, maybe; but not ...

Re: Wheel Bearings and IPC Error
I wasn't thinking they were water marks. They looked like they had depth, with pitting in the bottom.
Hard to tell from a low pixel web photo.

Re: Wheel Bearings and IPC Error
Were those the only three marks?
They look more like corrosion pitting where three rollers may have sat against the cup for a long time.

Donovan , you might be surprised to know the number of (experienced) folks who have accidentally gotten the firing order ...out of order.... and did a lot of trouble-shooting, parts replacing, etc etc ... before they realized that when they'd cleaned their plugs... they'd merely gotten two spark pl...

Re: Gill Battery class
What's your process for equalization? I ran 8 hours at 2A on an 18AH battery, which is less than some recommendations I've read, but when all the cells hit SG 1.275 I figured that was good enough. Gill recommends 10-12 hours at 3A, but I was afraid to cook the battery. Maybe I could have gotten bet...

I have been charging, desulphating, equalizing, checking, and servicing my brother's Gill battery for over 12 years. It has shown no signs of weakness until this year. I told him it's time for a new one

Re: Wheel Bearing Inspection pics
What type of solvent is best for cleaning the wheel bearings before repacking? I have been just forcing fresh grease through thr bearings . Does that mean you have not been inspecting them? When I don't have access to a tank of PD-680, I use kerosene, a soft brush, and compressed air (don't spin th...

Thanks for the link, George. I saved the pdf and will send it to the guys in my old shop (KC-135 Repair & Reclamation/Wheel & Tire Shop). Over the last 26 years I have seen almost all of what is in the pdf. We turned to Timken bearing exclusively about 12 years ago because they lasted throug...

Re: Mogas and a "no fly" winter
Drain the fuel into a container (thru the gascolator may be the easiest method) and use it in your tractor, etc. Fill the aircraft with avgas. (Not being didactic. Only giving what I truly believe to be the best advice.) Ya, I knew the right thing wouldn't be the easiest thing to do. There is a sli...

Mogas and a "no fly" winter
Because of personal schedules, and circumstances at the airport, we won't be able to fly the 170 until May (hangared). The tanks are full of mogas, with a small percentage of 100LL. What are our options to ensure the fuel will be OK in May?
