Re: ADS-B
Both types require position information from an approved WAAS GPS, either built into the ADSB equipment or fed from an installed GPS navigator. This really drives up the cost for those of us without a GPS . I disagree with this statement. Look at the Stratus ESG by Appareo. It has it's own WAAS GPS...

Re: ADS-B
But, you don't want to be the last one off the ship. In the last year, they might not be able to make them fast enough. This is exactly it. This, and avionics shops' capacity to install them. The airplanes I fly for work are both getting done soon; one in works now and the other getting a full pane...

Re: The Flying Trip From???? To ????
Thanks for the write-up! Brought back memories from 2009 when my father and I flew up there with a couple of other friends. Must go back again...

First Flight
Took my step daughter up for her first flight lesson, in the 170 of course. She's still smiling after the flight, so I'm thinking she's hooked!

Same can be said on spending $400k+ on a brand new C-172S today.MoonlightVFR wrote:How could one honestly cloak expenditure of $79,400?

Re: New strobe options
I installed the Aveo lights on mine. Pricey? Yes but simple installation, no power boxes to mess with, and they are very bright. I've received comments in-flight about how visible the plane is, which makes it all worth it to me. I also installed the tail unit as well.

Re: Battery Conundrum
The last pink battery I had vented acid through the caps while the airplane sat in the hangar (without any kind of battery tender on it). That was a mess to clean up, but I replaced it with a Concorde sealed lead acid battery. I'd have to look in the logbooks to see when that was, but it was about 5...

Re: New tachometer questions
The current tach was installed in the 60's, and has I believe incorrect markings. From the operating limitations it seems green arc of 2200-2450, yellow of 2450-2700 and redline of 2700 is correct--like the photos in this thread. (53 B, O-300A) Am I correct? I have not been able to locate any infor...

Re: Oil Cooler
I'm assuming you mean that for certification purposes. Seems like from the number of comments and articles regarding high oil temperature, perhaps not "necessary" but a pretty good idea.Bruce Fenstermacher wrote:They are not necessary on a 170.

Re: Oil Cooler
This one is the only one I know of. Your friend's oil temp is probably right, unfortunately.
A gauge without numbers is almost useless, as depending on which oil he is using he could go past the standard 225° limit to 240° by using 100W (SAE 50) oil.

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
In our 170s if the fuel valve is switched to off, the fuel tanks should still equalize through the valve but fuel will not flow to the gascolator. The only way to stop fuel from equalizing between tanks is to put the valve one side or the other but of course then the fuel will flow from that tank t...

Re: Mode C reporting in movement areas at all airports
Don't ya think we still should turn our transponders to stand by when in a group flight and not the lead aircraft? Maybe turn them back on when on short final* or after landing, but before exiting the runway? *I know when on short final we need to keep our attention on landing :) Perhaps if ATC dir...

Re: High Oil Temp?
By all means cool the engine the way the manufacturer indicates It's the oil temperature in the engine what's important . I would go for a fly and then land and check the sump temperature with a hand held digital temperature reader. What would reading the temperature of the sump tell you? Nothing o...

Re: 170 Travel Kit
Good topic! I'm sure there will be some good input. A few things that come to mind: Tailwheel tire & tube (some people take a whole wheel assembly), tools to r & r, small air pump (bicycle-type) Philips & flat screwdrivers. Oil Tie-down kit, including control locks & chocks ¾" o...
