Re: Recommended Modifications/Repairs for 170 Owners

14. Install an L19 tailwheel tie-down eyebolt (PN 0642105) in lieu of the AN7-22A bolt that holds your tailwheel assy to the main leafspring. Gents, I have looked in the 170 IPC Fig 20 and 170B IPC Fig 27 and 28 (in case it changed later) and in both cases the tailwheel assembly is attached to the ...

48 IPC Error - Aileron Pulleys

Minor issue in the parts catalog for the 1948. On Fig 42 the order of items 42-9 and 42-10 are reversed on the diagram. I thought it odd that it went 8->10->9 on the picture and then spent an hour figuring out why the AN4-42A bolts in the table didn't match what I took out AN4-15! In fairness...

Re: My C170 Permit-To-Fly Renovation Project

Hey Gary, Thank you, but I wouldn't say I've mastered Solidworks by any stretch! I had played about with Freecad (open source) which has some similar funtionality so I understood the basics and I've still only really used the basics. I do love the sheet-metal functionality and I've used it to make p...

Re: Propeller Repitch

Thanks to both of you! (Bruce, I will update my documentation with those references!) In Ireland (and I'm pretty sure the UK is similar) we can take a Type Certified aircraft off the register and make it a Permit-to-Fly aircraft if (and only if): It is a non complex aircraft whose initial design was...

Re: Propeller Repitch

Just for clarification... here's the dimensional differences in the two props designs: 1A170 McCauley Blade Dimensions.pdf 1C172 McCauley Blade Dimensions.pdf Hey George, I have an O-300-B from an early 172 going into my 170 rag-wing. It's getting a full overhaul (rebuild) despite being 700 hours S...

Re: Fuel pump or no fuel pump

Thanks Duane!

Based on their shotgun approach, they would really hate my electrical system. I started with one of Bob Nuckoll's designs and modified from there so it doesn't even vaguely resemble the original! :D

Re: Fuel pump or no fuel pump

Since that time the FAA no longer wants to approve such. Too bad that a method of increasing safety is no longer acceptable. Duane Shockey Hey Duane, I am renovating a ragwing in Ireland (formerly N4180V). It will no longer be certified; it will go on the EI- register with an IAA permit to fly. It ...

Re: Cabin Heat Conversion

Thanks Richard, That helps, especially knowing the 2" supplied adequate heat. I'm planning to leave the original 2" valve in place and feed the existing scat into the new ducting. I've deleted all the suction equipment so hoping that will leave enough space for a demister. Given 2C is a LA...

Re: Cabin Heat Conversion

Dave- I had a C-180 heater system installed on my 1951 170A with the Hanlon-Wilson mufflers. It is pretty much the same as the -B model heater I think. The heater valve was put on the left side where the old one was. New side panels with heat ducts had to be fabricated. It came out very nice and wo...

Re: To paint or not to paint

Thanks all for the various contributions. I have looked at CorrosionX and it is right about twice the price of ACF-50 over here. Likely because ACF-50 has made its way into the motorcycle industry and is quite widely available. I'm going to prime and paint the visible areas inside the cabin; I'm not...

To paint or not to paint

Rookie question of the day: It looks like the interior of 80V was primed at some point but it's wearing quite thin. She is bone dry - no damp, no grease or oil except right down at the tail (which I will be cleaning out) so it seems the perfect time to paint the interior. However, my A&P suggest...

Re: Midship Fairleads removal

You could always use a gas axe. No seriously , I always use a nylon cord to replace the cables on a change . But there are a couple of tools you can make which are very effective. You cut off 3 pieces of nylon cord [window sash] type . One length of about 1ft 4ins , another about 3ft 6ins lon...

Re: Midship Fairleads removal

Gareth, I did not understand your question until I saw your picture, I have copied here two pages from the B-model parts manual as you can see the B (and maybe the A) have a rectangular inspection opening (number 7) in the area you are working in. Thanks John, I must remember to check the later par...
