Re: Modern Pitot on '48 Ragwing
Gents, Today's aviation work included making the replacement pitot. All based on the info in this thread. I have changed to 6mm (1/4") PTFE pitot static lines so the original line that came down the A post from the wing was on a shelf complete with AN4 fitting. Some cutting, bending to match th...

Re: '48 Fuel Selector Valve Weirdness
I opened the valve today, thankfully with no need to remove it from the aircraft. It was drilled as George described with 2 ports at 90 degrees. I mounted it in a vice in the drill press and drilled through the "left" port to form a "right" port, so it now has a tee instead of el...

Re: '48 Fuel Selector Valve Weirdness
Hey George, I suspect you're correct. Looks like it might be one of these: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/hbshutoff.php Blurry pictures attached which may not tell you much. I have not pulled the valve so these are from my phone shoved into the hole in which the valve is located. My ...

'48 Fuel Selector Valve Weirdness
Hi All, I have just discovered that my fuel valve has 2 off positions, the left tank is in the left position and the right tank is in the straight ahead position. The image shows the plate that was installed. The photo from TC170A archive shows Left = left tank, Straight Ahead = Both on, Right = rig...

Re: Modern Pitot on '48 Ragwing
I think the EASA theory is that if you're in IMC you should have a heated pitot. Like any large bureaucracy they're not huge on logical discussion and "safety" is generally the reason for any CYA ruling they come up with ... Who can argue with safety, right? Don't get me started on how dif...

Re: Modern Pitot on '48 Ragwing
There is NO approval for a 170 of any model for flight in icing conditions. I do not recommend a heated pitot and suggest you manufacture an exact replacement for the original (drawings available in the 100 Series Service Manual) and avoid all the complicated issues associated with a heated pitot. ...

Re: Modern Pitot on '48 Ragwing
Thanks all for the helpful feedback. The inspection port is open and I have removed the stub of the original pitot by disconnecting and dismounting. I have the 100-series manual drawing and I'm ordering up some tube and fitting to fabricate a replacement. The AOA functionality in the EFIS can be use...

Modern Pitot on '48 Ragwing
Hi all, Has anyone put a "modern" pitot like the one below on a fabric wing? I'm assuming I will need to remove a section of the fabric and attach an aluminium panel spanning the ribs onto which this will mount. I'm a bit nervous about messing with the fabric system. I'm not sure how far b...

'48 Ragwing renovation update
I've made some progress on EI-AEN. the electrical system is mostly completed and the new panel is almost ready to be installed. I ended up using Gary's (n2582d) suggestion ( https://forum.cessna170.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15116#p141022 ) regarding the double pole switches to make light co...

Re: Is There A CESSNA 170 in a muesum?
I tend to agree with you. The ragwing 170 is the root airplane for the flat engine four place series of airplanes that are still produced today. Seems like that should make it a historically significant aircraft. Bill K I describe the '48 to anyone that asks (and some that don't) as the grandmother...

Re: Request: Door frame picture(s)
Gary,
I may be missing something. I have the knife-type locks in both doors. The service kit appears to be specifically for the left door only. Any idea what's the deal with that?
Gareth.

Thanks Bruce.Bruce Fenstermacher wrote:All the rest of the holes, couldn't say what they are for.
There are several places where she looks like someone took a 12-bore to her!
This pic shows before the cleanup. I had already drilled a stop hole here.

Request: Door frame picture(s)
Could someone please post or send a picture of their door frame at the point where the door latches closed? Basically the photo below but not messed up! :D Someone had riveted a steel plate over the holes on one side into which the door did latch nicely. However, there is underlying damage and also ...

Thanks Gene,
That makes sense. I have become familiar with mistakes in the IPC!
