Re: Tailwheel Assy ATTACH bolts/nuts

This has been said by others before, but let me say it again - the value of this forum to us non A&P types is immeasurable. I have the eye bolt on my tailwheel. When I replaced the old scott with a new Bushwheel tailwheel I tightened the plastic locknut as tight as I thought it needed to be (whi...

Re: I Soloed in my 170 B last night!

Congratulations Johnny. Your 170 looks a little like a Sabre tooth tiger - but, from the looks of the cowl the extended pipes must work.

Re: Imposter!

Based on your description of the problem and the follow up checks you completed my first suggestion would be to suspect the fuel pump.

Re: Brake Pads - Organic vs. Metallic

Thanks - I finally located the RAPCO page and it appears the #164-02601 disk and the RA66-105 pads are compatible.

Brake Pads - Organic vs. Metallic

I have #30-63B Cleveland brakes installed on my 170 - with the #164 02601 disk. Today I rotated the tires and regreased the bearings. I discovered the right main brake pads needed to be replaced. I was out of Cleveland pads but had Rapco RA 66-105 pads available. I installed the Rapco pads on the br...

Re: Don't try this at home....

The primary items I check/inspect during the preflight of a tail dragger are the tail wheel tire pressure, tail wheel leave springs and chains, and the brakes. A lesson I learned the hard way. Shortly after purchasing my Champ I flew it, with a group of friends in J-3s, to the San Juan Islands. Ever...

Re: Remote compass

My aircraft, a 1952 170B, also has the remote indicating compass. During my last instrument panel upgrade I had the remote compass placed on a pull type circuit breaker. I keep it pulled most of the time. I had the circuit breaker installed and keep it pulled as a result of turning the master on one...

For Dog Lovers

My wife is reading a great book - The Art of Racing in the Rain. The premise of the book is a dog narrating his life. One of the suggestions in the book is that when dogs die they become men, or that men evolved from dogs not monkeys - which explains the behavior of many of my friends. The book is f...

Re: Piano hinge secrets

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll try crimping first - I don't trust my skill with a drill enough to try safety wiring the hinge wire.

Piano hinge secrets

I have a 1952 170B. The top cowl is hinged length wise using two long piano type hinges. I am constantly chasing hinge pin, or wire creep. After about two hours of flight the hinge wires begin to creep forward. Has anyone discovered a secret for keeping the hinge wires in place?

Re: Speed

Miles is right. The 170 is great to fly - but, if you are planning a multi-day cross country try to limit your flight time to 6 hours per day - basically two three hour legs, or just under 600 miles per day. Two three hour legs really results in an eight hour day with fuel stops. I found that I Iike...

Re: Looking to become a 170 owner

Ignition before a full crank is a good fast start. My plugs and mags are in great shape and I generally get a turn or two before ignition. The only time I got ignition with less than a full turn was when I was hand propping my Champ - but, truthfully, that was after priming and pulling the prop thru...

Aviation history - pilot's license with photo

A friend forwarded the attached history to me - 100 pages - interesting. I found page 92 the most interesting - First pilot's license issued in 1927 - and guess what, it had a picture of the pilot on it!
