Re: Orange Goop Explosion in Engine?
You’ll have to let us know what the “orange goo” turns out to be. Looks just like something I’ve seen before…discovered on one of the main landing gear parts during post flight on the 550, we didn’t know what it was but thought maybe it could be remains of a bird strike. Turned out to be a large sp...

Re: Orange Goop Explosion in Engine?
... I looked under the cowling after the first flight back up today. To my shock, there was an orange mess below the generator and on the side of the firewall and battery. Thoughts? Reece, Clearly a bird strike. Chicken À L'Orange. If it happened in the States the FAA would like you to fill ...

Re: Orange Goop Explosion in Engine?
Firstly, that tube on the bottom rear of your generator is not an exit vent. It is a cooling air INlet. It should be plumbed to a source of fresh, cool air, such as via the aft engine-cooling-baffle bulkhead. Air enters your generator thru that tube, then travels forward inside the generator and ex...

Orange Goop Explosion in Engine?
I just had work done on my 170b (new generator & muffler), and I looked under the cowling after the first flight back up today. To my shock, there was an orange mess below the generator and on the side of the firewall and battery. The substance was a wax-like goo, as it hardened as the engine co...

Re: New Muffler Problems?
I recently did some minor exhaust repairs involving a small amount of stainless steel foil. I located some through Grainger Industrial Supply. It was not cheap-about $50 for the roll but it should last me and everyone I know a few lifetimes of exhaust repairs. I notice you are Canada so it would pr...

Re: New Muffler Problems?
 What may not be clear in this thread is the difference between “flanges” and “seal” . The muffler tubing has a flange built onto it to support the heater muffs and to reduce loss-of heated air into the lower cowling. The “seals” (made of soft aluminum pipe and bent to shape) further reduce ...

New Muffler Problems?
Hey everyone, I just replaced my O300's right hand muffler because the old one had cracks, and most of the internal baffles/piping had broken and fallen out. Anyway, my mechanic ordered and installed a replacement (Acorn Exhaust P/N 0550157-32), however, the replacement looks slightly different than...

Alternator or Generator?
Hi all, My 20amp Delco-Remy generator just died again on my 170b. Last year, it died so I replaced it with a new unit. Now, it started leaking and when my mechanic went to replace some seals, he saw the drive shaft was completely stripped. A new Delco generator costs about $700 Would there be a lot ...

Re: Brake Stuck On?
Turns out the pistons were seized inside the caliper. Re-bored the caliper and replaced some seals, fixed the problem.
Brake line is the flexi fabric one, so not the issue causing the jam.

Re: Brake Stuck On?
Also check that the brake line is not side loading the caliper which impedes the caliper from floating freely. I had this exact problem on my new to me 170. Brakes were not dragging enough to stop the wheels but they would make a scrapping sound. I took them apart three times to lube them. That las...

Re: Brake Stuck On?
The pistons don’t actually “retract” after brake release….. they just don’t apply pressure against the pads. If your caliper doesn’t “float” …I believe that may be at least part of your problem. Are the pins bent? Dirty? Scored? Are the bores clean and smooth and round? (When I do brakes one of the...

Brake Stuck On?
I just put new tires on my 170b, and once I got it back from the shop my left brake begun sticking. It rubs quite aggressively, and my plane pulls to the left on taxi. Immediately after taking off, the wheel stops spinning too. The caliper also doesn't 'float' when I move it by hand as it should—the...
