Three comments. The excellent example George pictured is not done according to the Cessna service letter. However it is done in the spirit of the letter. Cessna's spring is attached to the door latch catch axle while the example shown the spring is attached to the mechanism frame.

Second if your looking at the Cessna SL drawing you can clearly see a spring, item 12, PN 051119 that was introduced to the 170 at serial 25373. This spring holds the door handle flush to the fuselage. I also can manufacture this spring.

Last, with regards to George's comment, I can attest, there are a lot of 170 folks who are "pure as the driven snow". :D

SO much easier to go in through the striker plate... don't even have to remove the door from the plane. Just saying...

I've only removed the door to remove the entire latch mechanism if I wanted to take it home and work on it in the comfort of my garage. Many more times I've removed the latches leaving the door on.
