170B vs. 172 Nose Bowl?

Post by rnealon1 »

Is the 2 part nose bowl on my '54 170B the same as the early 172?

I tried to search 172 IPC; it looked like the upper part had the same part number but not the lower.

Thanks,

Bob

I have a 172 cowl (I think 1959.) You can see its different from the 170 and mine appears to be of heavier gauge metal.

Bob, the first 9000 C-172s used the same upper and lower nose cowls as the last 170Bs. The difficulty may lie in the last 170B lower nose cowls..which underwent a PN change... but their appearance is the same. I do not know the difference between the 0552002-51 which began with the ‘53 year-model (lower nose cowl SN: 25373 thru 26995) and the later 0595000-6 used on SN: 26996 and on thru the early 172 series. (until about the 1960 intro I believe, IIRC)

The same upper nose cowl PN 0595000-6 was used on the ‘53 170B thru the early 172 series.

Thanks for the information. My serial number is 26181, so I fall into the earlier (of the later?) 170B lower cowling.

Like many if not most of these there are a number of repairs on my cowling, mostly the lower, so just trying to think outside the box for replacement prior to painting.

Thanks,

Bob

Wire-mesh reinforcement embedded with JB Weld has been performed successfully to some of these cowls.

Thanks George, it certainly would be nice to maintain the original cowling, will have to look into someone who can do this (it sure won't be me).

Also based on the cost of a paint job, it is not going to happen in the immediate future.

Honestly that sounds really cheesy. How about excellent sheet metal work?

A wire/mesh/epoxy repair is strong, undetectable without removing the cowl, and often can be returned to service without requiring extensive paint. “Excellent sheet metal work” is expensive and rare on cowl nose bowls and demands re-paint.

Would it be any more “cheesy” to have it made completely out of composites? The Knots-2U product looks very nice to my eye.
What looks “cheesy” to me is a bunch of cracks, stop-drill-holes, and patches.
