1948 Vertical Stabilizer wrenching bolts

Post by melcessna »

The IPS reflects two bolts, an NAS145-18 and a 14. I cannot locate the 14. I've tried Preferred Airparts, Yingling, and Univar. An NAS145-15 is available. Is the 14 a typo in the IPS or are we using the 15 and putting a thick washer(s) on? Comments appreciated. Thanks

Genuine Aircraft Hardware Co.
https://www.gen-aircraft-hardware.com/p ... p?show=NAS

They have NAS145-14 listed but you have to dig thru the list to find it.

I feel for your pain. I too had great difficultly in obtaining these bolts . This was over 20 years ago now. I asked Cessna and they quote me over $850 a set . Gulp ,swallow where are my heart pills? There was a big aviation supplier in Kamloops [canada] .who supplied the -14 at about $25 each . Then a friend told me about a supplier about 1200 miles from me had a large box of the -15 and other sizes. I rang him and was quoted $9 each with paper work. I had searched all over the world for these bolts . I have just checked and the business that supplied me the bolts doesn’t exist any more . Before you fit these bolts make sure you have the correct washer and the washer facing the right direction on fitment.
Have you tried Spruce for these bolts ?

When I acquired N146YS the restorer handed me a box of parts which include one extra set of those bolts. I haven’t looked at them for years.
If you can’t find what you need, PM or email me and I’ll “loan” them to you. (When you find replacements just send them to me.)

After rechecking with Genuine Aircraft Hardware they show the NAS145-14 has been superseded by MS20005-5 - neither of which they seem to have in stock. You may want to call them to see if they can get them.

With everyone's input the part number of the wrenching bolts for the vertical stabilize in the 1948 IPC has been superceded. NAS145-14 and -18 are now MS20005-5 and -9. I sourced these bolts from Genuine Aircraft Hardware Co. out of Billings, MT. Thanks for all the help, much appreciated. Mike

AS ghostflyer pointed out…. be aware that special washers are used with these internal-wrenching fasteners….which have a radiussed internal edge which must be fitted to the radiussed internal head of the fastener. Do not use common AN960 etc washers.

Just out of curiosity, what did they charge you for those bolts?

-14 is $1.28 sold individually; -18 is $8.53 each sold in a package of five; countersunk washer is part number 20002C5 at $.28 each sold in a package of 25. I will bring the surplus to next year’s convention when I will have the restoration completed. Once again, I appreciate everyone’s help through all this. You’ve been great!
