I use WashWaxAll Belly Cleaner. It works fast and won’t hurt the paint since you don’t have to scrub it, just wipe with a microfiber towel.

I'm going to the hangar this morning to get some work done. I'm not sure I'm going to get it put back together today but, we shall see. I will let everyone know the results.

So, I went to the hangar today, Flipping the stacks around was the problem. I wasn't able to get them "clocked" and drilled today so, I'm hopeful I can get a picture tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for all of the helpful information!

They’re not perfect yet. But, much better, for sure!

If your Air Filter Installation (which leans to the port side) is any indication…. your exhaust is mirroring your engine installation. (Check for sagging engine mounts.)

Also, the nose cowl had some installed “bumps” or “cheeks”… what are those for…?? to clear mufflers…?? If so, your entire mount assembly may be in need of inspection/repair/adjustment.

Funny you mentioned this, today while working on the exhaust, I noticed there were some cracks in the rubber bushings. I guess I'll add that to me Aircraft Spruce cart. I'll replace those before I clock the exhaust stacks.

The mount is newly rebuilt by AWI. I'm not completely clear on the bumps or cheeks you speak of? The area around the stacks that is shiny is where I cleaned the soot from the stacks. I didn't clean the entire cowl yet.

George:
Are you referring to the two holes thru the nosebowl?

I suspect that those are from a prior installation of an alternate duct system for cabin heat. Reference Figure 34, Ref #87 of the 170 IPC.

Yes! Of course! THANKS for the reality-check! When I first saw those dark circles they looked like black “blisters” to me as I’d not enlarged the pic… Yep..those are holes. (I admit I’m not familiar with that particular modification of the early pancake system….OR how it should fit-up to the Hanlon-Wilson conversion. I’ll take a look at the Service Kit instructs on the HW to see what it says. It’s in the Mx Library.

It looks as if SK70A51-1 “”Hanlon Wilson Muffler Installation” does not provide for the alternate air inlets and only addresses the upper “scoops”
(Don’t know why it wouldn’t be minor alteration tho’.)

I suspect that it may have been only listed in the '48 Ragwing IPC. It probably was an attempt to provide a little ram air into the rather anemic early '48 heater system.
It appears that for the A model they added little scoops in front of the cylinders, which probably provided a little more airflow.

I only know about it because my '48 had this at one time, as evidenced by the holes in the cowling which were covered over at some point many years ago. My mechanic (who also has a '48) alerted me to the reason for the prior holes in the cowling.

When I finally gave up on the pancake mufflers, and purchased the newer style exhaust system from AWI, I was quite pleased with the additional heater performance!

By the way, one of the tailpipes which I received from AWI didn't fit the existing outlet hole thru the cowling, and required some modification of the pipe to fit.

This is a reminder that when parts don’t meet expectations…we need to notify the mfr’r. Charley Felds at AWI is very responsive and that company has supported our Assoc’n well in the past. I’ve discussed with Charley the possibility he might attend our mx seminar in Vermont…. hopefully that will happen.
