1954 Interior trim paint

I know this has been discussed a lot, the 1954 170B interior trim I think is trooper tan, has anyone ever come up with a close color equivalent in a rattle can? Like Duplicolor or other brands, there has to be some thing close to trooper tan out there.

Once upon a time I seem to remember Charlie Beyer in Tennessee finding Trooper Tan for his ‘54 B. His contact info should be in the directory. You can tell him I suggested you contact him.

Pay close attention to SERIAL NUMBER…. as the ACTUAL YEAR MODEL …. might be different than the stated year-model on the Airworthiness Certificate.

Our '54 (yes it is actually a 1954) is also the Trooper Tan interior paint. Does the number below the paint mean anything (E23-9691)? Or only to Cessna at the time?

I notice the colors described as "Polar Blue" and "Westport Red" in the brochure, but "Deep Blue" and "Deep Red" in the Paint Combinations. Consistency was not a highly valued virtue.

At the time, Cessna constructed airplanes from Surplus military and common (cheaply-available) automotive sources which had recently returned to productivity. The paints used were automotive and sources were various. The numbers have not been correlated to any modern paints is the common belief, tho’ many have tried.

Even the use of a computer monitor (such as what I posted above) is not 100% reliable due to monitor-differences. (They are not “true” color replications.)

The best way to match original colors is usually to find a sample of un-exposed area, such as beneath a panel-cover or trim, and have it computer-matched.

There are a very few modern paint-numbers which have been matched by our Members and shared in these forums. One set that I know of is my own “Insignia Red” and “Gull Grey” which has been correlated to a Courtalds red and a Dupon Imron grey.

As I wrote here Cessna appears to have "borrowed" paint colors from contemporary automobiles. On the 1955 C-170B Autumn Rust and Trooper Tan were interior trim colors. I think someone in Cessna's design department must have owned a Nash as both of those colors are found on the 1952 Nash.

Vintage Paint has a good selection of paint colors chips with names which match what is found in the C-170 IPC paint code charts. Here's a sample:

Alternatively, you might consider buying a paint color chart for a 1952 Nash such as this one and then having a local auto paint store scan the chip and mix up an spray can of Trooper Tan for you. It would be a lot cheaper than paying hazmat shipping charges for a spray can online.

Thanks George but credit goes to Bruce. He's the one who led me to Paintref.com in the discussion here on Gull Gray paint.

Wish I had the time for a classic car restoration. I'm doing well to maintain my family's fleet. In the middle of replacing my daughter's Chevy Volt head gasket now. If I did a car restoration it would have to be a 1949-52 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 in its original Serge Blue to match the C-170B.

Here is a link for early Nash Paints that references Trooper Tan, you can buy samples, same as the Cessna Trooper Tan, not sure, out to the hangar to see if there is a shred of the original paint, time to get rid of the Rustoleum brilliant blue some one used on my interior
