good morning, I am progressing well on my 48 project and wanted to ask a few questions. In looking for some parts I noticed there aren’t many options for wingtips in a 48 compared to an A or B model. Are there there after market choices for these, I was hoping to add landing lights there to replace the grimes currently in the wing.

Also what are my options for replacing the firewall insulation and I saw where someone used a foam to insulate pretty the entire fuselage, is there nay issue with that relative moisture retention? I live in FL and I’m sure Mother Nature doesn’t need any help holding on to water.

I am also planning to replace my panel since everything in my current one was trashed. Relative to comm radios and GPS I’ve seen some recommend a simpl comm and the an IPad for the GPS and then others like a panel mount GPS/comm, any recommendations or thoughts from anyone who has upgraded?

Thanks,
Arthur

Firstly, I am NO expert on 1948 cessna 170,s . But I do own a 170A series. When I replaced my firewall and for insulation i used a black closed foam with aluminium foil covering on one side and a thin “lead “ foil on the other . I purchased it from Spruce. It’s about 1in in thickness . When I replaced my instrument panel ,I used Garmin for flight instruments and Electronic International [EI] for my engine instruments . It was about compatibility with each other . But saying that I had to retain my original ASI and Altimeter when the 2 G5,s were fitted. When talking about fabric wings ,I thought the wing tips were part of the wing construction . But saying that I have seen in Alaska a couple of 1948 170,s with metal wings .
I was informed by one of the owners that he had the wings metalized under a STC. This modification was beautifully done and the aircraft looked like it just came off the factory floor. I can’t recall what the wing tips looked like . The other aircraft appeared that it had its wings off a Cessna 170a series . It still had the twin struts and the original dorsal fin. It had the split edge flaps BUT someone had riveted an extension of about 1.5 in strip on the trailing edge of the flaps . The legality of this ????.

Hey thank you the answer, Ive actually gotten a few parts from Alaska for mine. My wings are all metal, I sent photos of the inside of these from the inspection holes to a parts guy I've met who confirmed these are metabolized fabric wings. Any chance you may post a picture of your panel? I'll check with Spruce on the insulation.

Arthur, enter “Woodstock” and/or “Skycraft” in the search box to find information on leading edge landing light STC’s for the ‘48.
