There is a guy that posts on the Facebook 170 page occasionally that rebuilds yokes and control tubes. His name is Jeff Tourt. The contact info he puts on there is colorfastinc@sbcglobal.net. Looks like he is in northern Illinois.

I have a set of yoke tubes that I need re-chromed. Is there anyone that does that in the southern part of the country (Texas)?

Dixie Plating in Houston re-chromed some Stearman seat tubes for me in the mid-80s. They were knowlegeable to know also to BAKE them in an oven for 4 hours to remove Hydrogen-Embrittlement which occurs during chrome plating.

There are also a number of places in San Antonio (Google is your friend)…but I see one of the places which pops-up is Jordan Propeller…an outfit I have poor opinion of.

All shops I have spoken to do decorative chrome plating. I believe these tubes are what I know as “hard chromed” similar to a hydraulic cylinder. After looking at the Dixie website, it sounds like they can do exactly that. Thanks George!

Thanks all for the good input. We were making avionics and panel updates, installed a pair of u avionx Av-30C's and updated our tail beacon to the new X model. Thats when we decided to re chrome or replace our control yokes.
Found a company, Name: ARMOLOY, of Western Pa. Address: 1231 Rodi Road Turtle Creek Pa. 15145 Phone# (412-823-1030). They do hard chrome, and have a new process that is harder and smoother. Cost 250.00 for both yokes.
Cost of Rivets: found best price at Preferred Airparts. Item 0413216-1 57.94 ea. 0413216 42.57 ea. And so now we are re Powder coating the yokes, making a new panel with led backlighting. Cost and pictures when finished.

I went through the process of getting my control wheels powdered coated and obtained the correct rivets [6 of]. Not at the out rages price being asked now. There are only 4 rivets to replace . “What could go wrong ?”Originally I did not remove the original rivets some body unknown did . . The first rivet fitted, the head had split . The second rivet ,the head split again . Yes we were using the special manduals . The third rivet fitted looked “ok”. But the shalf would turn in the control wheel , small amount of movement.
A AN3 bolts [4 of] found their way into the control wheels. They were torqued to stop crushing . That was done nearly 20 years ago . no issues what so ever as it’s an owner constructed part. It’s had 20 100hrly inspections and a full SIDS inspection ,many pilots fly it including Government inspectors .nobody has said any thing . I painted the head of the bolts cream to match the control wheels .

Ghostflyer, I’ve also seen something similar. Unless you are a true “originality nut”….It’s difficult to justify the almost $100 Cessna wants for a long mild steel rivet when a machine screw will replace it. (YMMV, but check with your IA if concerned) I’ve seen a number of airplanes which have made this substitution.

MS27039C -1-23 (which is equivalent to NAS220) is a 10-32 corrosion resistant structural machine screw and has a grip of 1” (or use whatever dash-no you prefer) and cost less than $2.50 each from Spruce: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... 9-0806.php

From 43.13-1B, Chap 7:
7-15. STRUCTURAL SCREWS. NAS502, , AN509, NAS220 through NAS227, and NAS583 through NAS590, may be used for structural applications, similar to structural bolts or rivets. These screws are fabricated from a material with a high-tensile strength and differ from structural bolts only in the type of head.
