January 8, 2022 Flying X River Ranch 8TA3

Post by GAHorn »

The following Email was sent-out by headquarters. Perhaps the reference to the comment “George operates his 172 from the ruwy on a regular basis,…” needs humorous explanation since it’s a 170 Assoc’n Fly-In… The point being that the turf runway 10/28 condition is fine for tricycle-gear airplanes as well as conventional-gear 170s, etc…. While the runway is not as smooth as a golf fairway… it is suitable for most aircraft… I have operated Bonanzas, Barons, and even a Twin-Bonanza/King-Air type here….. however I would probably not recommend a short-wheelbase/stiff-legged/low-prop-clearance aircraft such as a Mooney … The nearby Spicewood airport 88R would be better for those aircraft and we can pick you up at the 88R fuel-pumps.
Anyone driving should contact me for the security-gate code at our ranch-strip 8TA3 or plan to meet us at Opies on Hwy 71.

Here’s the email:
Texas January 8, 2022 Flying X River Ranch 8TA3
Members George and Jamie Horn have kindly invited C-170 Association members to their private airstrip on January 8, 2022. Promptly at 11:00 am, they will transport us to Opies BBQ http://opiesbarbecue.com/ located on Hwy 71 in Spicewood.

The Ident. for their airstrip is 8TA3 http://www.airnav.com/airport/8TA3.

George says: Use runway 10/28. 3,000 feet of good turf. The tie-down area is north of the windsock midfield, right in front of their house.
George operates his 172 from the rwy on a regular basis, so the airstrip should be in good condition for most general aviation light planes. Maybe no Mooneys
Anyone driving can contact George for instructions or use google maps or your GPS for their address of 993 Flying X Rd., Spicewood, TX.

Would you please plan to arrive prior to 11:00 am?

Past President of the Assoc’n Richard Pulley drove-in thru the fog from Fredricksburg and joined Jamie, our son Tracy (soon to complete his Pvt Pilot) and I at Opies Bar B Que! It was good food and Richard regaled us with some of his great flying experiences.

Jamie and I will Host another opportunity here later in this New Year!

Meanwhile, we hope to see everyone at Tyler, Feb. 5.

You guys missed a really great time! And for those who were wondering, George did his share of the "regaling" as well!

As few of the lunch fly-ins as I get to attend, being only 55 miles away, there was no chance I was going to miss this one! Fog or no fog. I did have to dodge one nice size buck who appeared out of nowhere calmly strolling across the 4-lane highway. 8O

The Bar-B-Q was excellent as always and the butter beans were a real treat for me, I didn't know Opie's BBQ had them. Cooper's BBQ should go on notice they need to step up their game!

Thanks George, Jamie, and Tracy for driving over to meet me (I was going to eat that delicious BBQ in any case!). I'll gladly go back again when they reschedule the fly-in.

Good times!
