I just got a call from Jay Baeten offering his home strip as a staging area for 170s going into Oshkosh after the convention. His strip isn’t on the chart but is in aviation databases as 9WS2. It’s about 35 miles northeast of KOSH, located about 8 miles south of KGRB, about a mile west of the GRB ILS 36 localizer. Jay says he has room for at least 50 airplanes, and you can pitch a tent or lay a sleeping bag on the floor of his 90x45 hangar.

It would seem that the issue with calling Kewadin for hotel reservations has been resolved with the 22110 code. I apologize for not realizing that was required. There was also an issue with the online reservation link. The Kewadin has fixed that issue, and the link provided in the FlyPaper is now working: https://book.b4checkin.com/chameleon/ke ... ssociation

Additional info from Jay Baeten regarding using his home strip on the way to Oshkosh: We do have porta potties, running water; & possibly get a crew together to cook breakfast for you guys, if we get enough to fly in.

I just made my hotel reservation at the Kewadin for the convention online without any problems. Looking forward to it!

I would love to camp at Jay’s but the departure day of the convention, July 23, is the last day to secure the reserved group parking at OSH, so I’ll probably fly straight to OSH on Sunday the 23rd.

The departure day for the convention is Saturday, July 22nd. If there’s an error published somewhere I need to get it corrected.

Thanks for clearing that up Miles, I had not looked at the agenda before my post.

I’ll plan on camping at Jay’s Saturday night.

Detailed convention information and a registration form are now available at https://cessna170.org/about/convention/. The registration form should be in the next FlyPaper as well.

Please use the UPDATED registration form linked in the previous post. I’m still getting older forms, which omitted the $8.50/person box lunch for the Pictured Rocks Boat Tour, had an incorrect deadline for the registration discount, and didn’t include a link to the convention shirt order form. If you’ve already registered but didn’t sign up for the box lunch on the Pictured Rocks trip, you may do so on arrival at the convention. If you’ve registered but haven’t yet ordered your shirts you may use the form linked in the previous post until June 1, when I have to order shirts.

Any chance we could get the maintenance forum recorded or streamed this year for those of us unable to attend?

If someone has the equipment and could volunteer to do the recording and distribution, that would be great. These forums usually last several hours, and I don’t think your usual phone or tablet would be up to the task

I recently had experience with a service/app called Eventlive which for a nominal $50 will record, stream, and publish the video file (for a year) for any event. The resultant video file would be downloadable as well. You would just need a phone or tablet on a tripod and someone to push record. Worked out really well for our event.

For anyone wanting to rent a car for the convention, Damon at Soo Line Limo in Kinross, 906-0635-0427, www.soolinelimo.com, has a few Buick Encore SUVs for $77/day. July is peak season so early reservations are necessary and the rates are high but $50/day less than Enterprise.

Damon will either deliver the car to KCIU/Chippewa County Airport in Kinross, 15 miles south of Sault Ste. Marie, or KANJ/Sanderson Field Airport in Sault Ste. Marie for the same price. He sounds like a nice guy and is willing to work with pilots around weather delays if you give him a few hours notice.

Soo Line also operates a local 24/7 shuttle service for $9/person anywhere in Sault Ste Marie if you find yourself needing a ride.

Thank you for that research Richard! I’ll have Jan add it to the convention web page when she gets a chance. The Kewadin Hotel is supposed to provide local transportation as long as it’s to or from the hotel. Also, our rental vans will be available when not on tours.

For those who might be interested in staging for Oshkosh at Jay’s place but don’t want to camp under the wing or in Jay’s hangar, Jay has let me know that there is a hotel close by, and he would be more than happy to provide transportation to and from.
