2023 Cessna 170 Convention, Sault Ste. Marie Michigan

Post by cessna170bdriver »

Karen and I just arrived in Sault Ste. Marie to spend a couple of days meeting with tourism, hotel, and airport personnel to get planning for the 2023 Convention started in earnest. It’s clear and a million, 20 degrees F, and there’s about three feet of snow on the ground. 8O (It should be snow-free and at least 50 degrees warmer for convention.)

The planned dates are July 16-22, 2023, the week before Oshkosh. 2023 is the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the Cessna 170, and a mass gathering of 170s is planned at Airventure, so hopefully many of us can do both events.

The host airport is the Sault Ste. Marie Municipal Airport (KANJ). Commercial airports close by are Chippewa County International (KCIU) and Sault Ste. Marie Ontario (CYAM).

The host hotel will be the Kewadin Casino Hotel, 2 miles east of KANJ.

Planned tours include Soo Locks, Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Island, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Tahquamenon Falls, and possibly the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. A list of other places to visit on your own will be forthcoming.

Plans are well underway for the 2023 Cessna 170 Vintage Reunion at AirVenture. I emailed Ron Magos this morning to advise that VAA will be ready to park 100 or more 170's. For this year we have registered more than 100 V Tailed Bonanzas and in 2023 the VAA featured airplane parking is planned to be even larger. The bottomline is to please plan to bring your 170 to AirVenture 2023.
Soon after this AirVenture, the registration list will be started and more information will be provided.
Best Regards, Dan

Thank you Dan! As I mentioned above I chose the dates of the convention to make it more convenient for those who wish to follow up with a trip to AirVenture to do so. It’s been a long time since I've seen 100 170s in one place so hopefully we can do it next year.

Well its been pointed out to me that the convention flyer passed out at the Burlington convention mentions Fudge more than once.! The flyer has been on the kitchen table, studied and I’m fairly certain that I won’t be solo next year. Looking forward to it, going to Oshkosh and winning the 170B from AOPA, ok maybe a new airplane is stretching it.

Called today for Res, reservations clueless as to our rate, put me on hold then put me on another line to another department (Events ?) . Line went to voicemail. Sorry Miles if I’ve missed it or maybe I’ve not missed it but couldd the code for our rate be posted in the members area.

Just called for reservations. They asked for a group number which I didn't have but I told them the Cessna 170 Association. Patty sent my confirmation for Jul 16 arrival with departure Jul 22. The rates was correct as expected of $94 Sunday -Thurs night and $103 for Friday night. The reservation included the name of the group: Cessna 170 Association, the Group number: 22110. [edit-gh]

Miles should probably confirm this.

FYI make sure they have you checking out on the 22nd if that is what you want to do. It might appear their system puts you in for a full week leaving the 23rd which would be an extra night.

Bruce, the code, is what I was referring to. As mentioned when you call Res likely its a call centre and they couldn’t help me until they knew :D the code, also I thought I was calling the hotel but not so, even when I got through to someone who chiseled down to find the rate, they didn’t know which hotel I wanted or where the 170 convention was taking place. Don’t they know they’re dealing with bigwigs? :D

Sorry to hear of the trouble with hotel reservations. I will give them a call tomorrow and see if I can get it straightened out. Also, Karen and I are headed up there this week and I can talk to them in person if necessary.

I called and used the code Bruce posted and had NO PROBLEM at all. Reservations worked just fine. I added the code to your original informational post also Miles.

Karen and I came to to Sault Ste Marie for a couple of days to trial run some of the tours and talk to the folks at the airport again. Sure looks a LOT different that it did six months ago! Clear skies and 75F, hopefully what we’ll seeing next July.
