What’s my 170 worth

I’m asking for insurance renewal ... 1948 Ragwing, ~200 SMOH, ~3000 total time.

It’s painted, fabric is ~15 years old but always hangared and in great shape.

No mechanical issues.

Full interior (replaced at refurb ~15 years ago).

Panel is near stock, has an single radio and transponder. Otherwise pretty much everything is as delivered from Cessna (Venturi, generator, etc)

I currently have it insured for $40k, which seems high to me. I own it free and clear, so no loan number to satisfy.

AOPA used to have Vref but that seems to have gone away.

Any thoughts?

I would say $40K is not high. Remember, repairs are expensive. Many things that can happen can add up to that number quickly. And they will total the plane before you get there. Take a look at Barnstormers and compare what is advertised to your plane. And how much are you going to save by dripping the hull by $5K? Not much I bet. I bought a 170B about 8 months ago. I have it insured for 50. That’s a little more than I paid, but less than what I have in it because of avionics I had installed.

My opinion.

Nice Paint/Glass = $5k
Nice Interior - $3500
Digital Com, Txdr, Nav ADSB = $8K
Total value = $44,900.

GAhorn, how did you come up with the value for the engine? I just overhauled mine, and now have 12 hours on it. Might have to upgrade to a 182 next year, so I'm curious about values as well. They seem to be going up.

Based on George’s numbers, I’d probably be at ~37K or so, I do not have ADS-B or any fancy electronic stuff. Just an old radio and transponder.

I’m gonna ask just to see what the price difference is. I’ll post numbers for followup once I hear back.

Thomas - I had my 170A insured for $44k (original purchase price). When I installed a Garmin 650 and a Garmin G5 last year, I had the insurance company up the amount to $55k. If memory serves correct, the premium increase was minimal - only around $50-60 for the year.

Aircraft “Bluebook” values etc assume a 6 month old annual inspection, and a mid-life engine. The O300 engine has an 1800 hour TBO. THIS engine described is a 200 hr SMOH, therefore it has an added value over the average by 700 hours...multiplied by $12/hr average overhaul cost equals $8400 added value.

(Mind you, I personally believe the BlueBook value of hourly engine costs of an O300 are outdated at $12/hr, IMO, but that’s what they claim.)
