These tailpipes were from the initial run that Doug had made. I have had them on the shelf for several years and finally got tired of cleaning the exhaust stains off of the cowl every few hours. We used the existing Hanlon Wilson mufflers and only the tailpipes were changed.

I have an excellent airframe guy who contoured and flush-riveted sheetmetal patches flush with the outside skin with oversize patches inside the cowl. He then used J-B Weld to fill the edge gaps between the patches and cowl skin and painted the lower cowl on the outside. He did a very nice job.

It’s not really a purchase, but the bird is finally getting the polished spinner she deserves. The cost was the better part of a day spent with some sand paper and the polishing wheel.

I got the 170 back from the avionics shop Friday and have been exploring all the new toys! Can't wait for some good weather to see them all in action.

With nothing good to rent locally to complete my instrument training, I thought it would be a "good thing" to upgrade the plane to IFR ready. I wanted to add a second radio with GPS: a GNC 355. I wasn't happy with the gyro instruments not spooling up until I was climbing out, so I went with deleting the venturi vacuum system and adding two GI 275s. I needed a new audio panel for the second radio. So far, so good.

I wanted to put the stall horn under the panel, but it seems to have a little light that has to be visible. Who knew? So it got moved over to the right But the mag switch is right over the GPS and the metal key fobs would block and scratch the screen. Moved the mag switch down. That left a hole, and since I need a clock we moved it where the mag switch used to be.

Then I wasn't really happy with the tach being way over on the right. And the oil pressure was always showing 10 pounds high. Why not just get another GI 275 engine instrument and delete all the little ones? More expensive than all the fixes, but totally cool looking. And I like all that engine data.

On the pitot static check the airspeed indicator failed due to a case leak. I didn't want to spend to fix it so it got deleted. New circuit breaker panel, cleaned and painted control wheels, new push to talk. Nice symmetrical panel. Glass yet vintage. A future upgrade will be new fuel level sensors to send to the engine GI 275 so I don't have to bend around to see the left tank level. But it does have fuel flow now so I'll know have a good idea of what's left.

Quite the fun adventure getting it all done.

To bad you didn't ask. We knew. #1 A stall warning system is not required at all in a 170A. #2 If it was required or in your case you just wanted to keep it, you could have put in under the panel JUST LIKE all 170B models serial 26996 and on.
CAUTION - My forum posts may be worth what you paid for them!

Fooey. The avionics IA was certain that it had to be there and visible. Oh well... next time :D

Jim: hope you enjoy the new panel. I flew IFR from Aurora, IL to Ottumwa, IA yesterday. It was the perfect day for a 170 with the upgrades. 2,500’ BKN- OVC enroute, SKC above. Marginal to fly VFR, but I was on top at 6,000’.

Good luck with the IFR training!

How does deleting the Airspeed indicator meet the requirements of FAR 91.205..? (I take it that it that the GI-275 has a pito/static input to replace that guage completely?)

(b) Visual-flight rules (day). For VFR flight during the day, the following instruments and equipment are required:

(1) Airspeed indicator.
…..

Is it an approved complete-replacement such that the basic A/S can be deleted?

George the GI-275 is certified to replace the Analog Airspeed Indicator and Altimeter, just like in a fancy jet. I left my steam gauges in for redundancy and to maintain a classic panel look as best I could.
