Computer HD woes, split from Augmentation thread.

Another example of technology over dependence.

While at convention in KANSAS a bad storm ironically hit my house in Texas tearing off the metal roof and deluging the main portion of the house including my office. My computers and even my printer which was covered by a plastic dust-cover were soaked. Windows 10 was a relief from Windows 8 but they both frustrated hell out me when my Win-XP was watered thru an open window by a lawn sprinkler.
After reading Bruce’s love affair with Mac I’ve decided to toss Windows and attempt an embrace of Apple. Unfortunately it will cost an estimated $1500 to even attempt to recover data directly from the disk of my old Hard Drives which cannot be read for recovery.
I cannot fathom the amount of data and supporting documentation that may have been lost...that computer on my soaked desk contained all the backups from previous computers and the backup hard drive also.

Sorry to hear your woes George. Hopefully insurance will get you a new roof and interior.
I really liked the AA video, both times :D

Sorry to hear about the weather travails.

I switched to Mac after I lost my SECOND Windows Hard drive (and associated data) and have been extremely happy for over 10 yrs. I’m not zealot for much of anything but I’ve got iPhone, iPad, iMac, and MacBook Air, and they all talk to each other, somehow. It’s a beautiful thing.

Good luck with the recovery from the storm.

Thx, Everyone. I’ll split this storm discussion off so as to not hijack the thread. I’ve taken my HDs to two different specialists in Austin and they confirm the platters must be removed to read the data. I’ll probably lose them as I can’t even recall accessing the HDs from two computers previous which were saved. It’s sort of like not knowing what’s been lost because you can’t look it over to decide if it should be saved. 8O

(I hate to consider my previously saved work may be unworthy of such efforts.) :?

So sorry to hear about your loss and the fight with the insurance companies is something we all do not need . While I am not a fan of storing my information in the cloud ,what we do each month everything goes on a memory stick and stored in our safe . Hard drives do not last forever plus we have been held to ransom by hackers so it’s hard drive out and new hard drive in . I have found a program called “Bytes by Bytes” is a good retrieval program.

I try to keep data from my windows PC that I REALLY don’t want to lose on a USB thumb drive. On my iPad and iPhone, it’s in the “cloud” which I don’t totally understand, but in the past when I’ve upgraded devices it seems that the kids at the store don’t have any trouble seeing to it that the device I walk out with has every thing in it as the device I walked in with.

As far a recovering your hard drives, I’d say it worthwhile to the Association to try to recover them. I’ll pledge the first $100 toward that effort. Any one else with me?

I am $100.00 in Miles, all the great work George does for us is definitely worth it.

OK , Thanks Miles and John, but lets hold off for now on this... we don’t know what insurance will do yet nor do we know what is really “lost” or not... I’m not looking for a go-fund-me yet.. But the intent is truly appreciated.

George-
If there isn't a computer nerd in Austin that can recover your data, I would be surprised. And if he's also a smart businessman and charges you what his service is worth to the association, I'm in for my share as well.

I’m also willing to pony up on data recovery.

You guys are wonderful ... and your offers are truly heartening... but please STOP! I am not soliciting assistance on this and I plan to file a claim with insurance for any damages, plus there’s not yet a survey on what data is actually worth trying to recover. I did utilize “One Cloud” which may have most of it stored where I can recover it, I’ve found out just this week.
But THANK YOU ALL for your kind and generous offers.

George knows, as he is one, there are a lot of great very generous people in this organization. And I'm not talking about just fun folks to be around or someone who will give their advice, what you want to hear or not.

I personally have seen generosity at a level most could not imagine for all sorts of things. And I'm sure I only know of a very small percent of it.
