New Owner!

Hello everyone!
I'm the proud, happy owner of N9955A, a 1950 170A. Polished, blue (so it's very fast), and very patient with me as I try to learn all the little things that make her special.

I had a brief fling with an Archer, but it didn't really work out. I've been flying since 1983, mostly going from place to place. The ownership bug hit again, and I was looking for another "go somewhere" aircraft. Checked out the Navion, 182s, and TR182s. Got working on my instrument rating again (long story), and then realized that I really don't want to go anywhere. I couldn't commit to the time and effort to keep up on instruments so I'd be safe. I just wanted to fly. So I started on tailwheel training and I was hooked. Most fun I've had flying in a LONG time. Exhilarating and humbling all at the same time. I've loved the 170 since I made a balsa model way back in high school. So I started looking. Everything just came together with the right plane at the right price a little sooner than expected, but there it is.

Huge thanks to everyone who contributes on this forum. I've learned a ton in just a short time. And I'm just getting started.

Jim

Hi Jim. Plane looks nice in blue. Can vouch for how fast it is but likely between green and red. :D

Congratulations, Jim! Beautiful 170 that you have found. Where are you based?

I'm based at KSUE Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. But for now it's living in Manitowoc to be closer to my tailwheel instructor.

And here's the panel. I thought it would take a while to get used to something other than a six-pack panel, but this makes sense. Other than trying to figure out which hand goes on the starter and which on the throttle, and stretching over to see the tach everything is in just the right place. And ADSB compliant!

And it use to be a slow red plane according to that color behind your plexiglas panel. No wonder someone painted it blue. :D

CONGRATULATIONS Jim!

Ignore the false claims about color vs speed... your airplane will be seen by all the green-with-envy owners from their six-o’clock position in-trail.

I see those avionics below the panel... I imagine the flap handle as well as the control-column “T” comes fairly close to them... what are they ?? (the pic doesn’t quite make them identifiable on my device/display.)

Isn't it the green is because they are envious and red because they are embarrassed you are so much faster? :D

It's a Garmin GNC 225A nav/com and a Garmin GTX 335 transponder topped off with a NAT AA80 intercom. The installation is well clear of the flap handle. I haven't crawled under to see how close the control T comes to the back side, but the control are free through their full motion so all is good.

Welcome

You and your beautiful airplane

The air is quiet in St Louis and I just heard the Tornado Siren go off. Muffled Voice. 09//2/2019.

Hope it is not a disguised political message.

Better look outside.

Jim,

Welcome. I’m a fairly new owner but happy to say that 150+ hours in I’m very happy with my 52 model 170B. Lots of great stuff to learn here. Enjoy the flying. Cheers!

Hi,
Just wanted to also let you know I’m a new owner of a slow red and white 1954 C170B built in 1953! I have wanted a C170 for awhile since my 1947 C-140 was getting harder and harder to get into! This is the same 140 I soloed in 1966 on my 16th birthday.
I purchased the 170 from a gentleman in Ohio who rebuilt it after it had been flipped in a windstorm in 1995.
Everybody that has inspected says it is a very good repair. Probably did everything wrong when I purchased it but it has all turned out good.
In October I flew it to Warner Robins AFB for Thunder over Georgia airshow. We sat on the ramp for three days
as a static display. Everybody enjoyed looking and sitting in the cockpit. I had to be very careful especially when the children got in. They all wanted to yank and bank the controls!! Yikes!!

Jim,
Congratulations on your fine purchase. Yes, blue is a fast color and that’s why every body is envious and some people can’t except the facts . I have found the 170A does fly differently from other models and I really like it . Plus jokes aside I found the 170a was faster than a 170b. The person who owned the 170b went to extraordinary lengths to check both aircraft instrumentation and even checked the props dimensions . BUT. The 170a was still 3knots faster . I just rubbed salt into the wounds by saying it was my superior rigging .
