Me too!!!

Having choices on our 70 year old airplanes would be great. Any idea what this cost vs. for example $5k for a new McCaulley 8042 climb prop for the 8 bolt O300A engine?

The Sensenich website lists the STC'd prop for $6350. $7085 including backplate and composite spinner.

To me that cost delta would be more than worth it.

I just hope if they are working on an STC they will do it for all 170 models and not just the B.

I don’t think we will ever see a stc for our airplanes themselves. If anything it might be just for the particular engine. Example lycoming o360 180 hp. If the engine prop combo is stc’d then you get a field approval for your aircraft. I’m not speaking for sensenich but in my humble opinion I don’t see the o300 ,c145 8 bolt crank getting stc’d . The cost to do that is very prohibitive. Now let’s talk the o300D 6 bolt. I know of one using a adapter built by saber manufacturing. And using a 82” sensenich ground adjustable. Combo has a little over 300 hrs testing now. Vibration analysis done with a dynavibe. No bad harmonics from startup to 2950 rpm ever seen. That being said sensenich has not done their own vibration analysis for this combo. When we get the time we will be testing 80” and 78” blades . The prop pins that came with the prop for setting the blade angle / degree’s were ok . But we made more pins ourselves so we could set the prop in 1/4 degree in-cremates, And dialed in the prop to our satisfaction.

You might contact Sensenich and let them know all C-170 did, can, or do have O300 engines. Everyone seems to think the 170B is the only model.

How much more than 76” could a 0-300 swing do you think ?

I'm no expert but it seems like lots of people are running the 8042 under the Kenmore STC with good results. The 8042 is an 80" prop.

WILCO!

For those wondering about the prop blade length, it may be helpful to know that there exists regulation in that regard to prevent prop-stikes. Tricycle gear airplanes must be tested with flat nose tires and nose struts and still maintain a 7” ground clearance IIRC as do taildraggers with flat mains and most-nose-down/hard-landing demonstrations.

Yes but if it’s ground adjustable, going to coarse, at what point does the o-300 speed drop. Or at 53 pitch what is max rpm obtainable with 80” . Guess that’s the fine details in the STC :D

we have tested the 82" on the o300D 6 bolt crank but had to have a prop hub adapter built "sabre manufacturing". we will be testing the 80" and 78" this winter. biggest problem just saying o300engines are the crankshaft / hubs. I do not see it being viuable on a 8 bolt crank. 6 bolt crank yes. I am back at work and do not have my spread sheet that we used for our testing so cant give you actual factual numbers that we came up with. Running the 82" prop is so much better than the seaplan 1A175SFC prop 80/43. whne i get home in a month I will try and get all the numbers and the 80" and 78" tested. I we did do vibration analysis of nour own using a dynavibe while running on the ground and while flying. did not see any issues at all.
