New C170B owner

Post by GielV »

Hi all!

As of last week I’m a new owner to a 1954 Cessna 170B.
Currently under a Finnish registration but going back to an N-reg soon.
We picked up the aircraft in Poland and ferried the aircraft to it’s new homebase in Belgium.
750NM travelled, 3 fuel stops, 8 hours flown and ~55 USG consumed.

With only limited taildragger experience (~30 hrs) of which I had 0 hours flown in a C170 it was going to be quite the adventure. Luckily the previous owner set aside some time to take me up and do some circuits to get a feel for it.

After some “ok” circuits I felt somewhat reassured enough to begin the adventure, we selected a beautiful day for it with light winds initially with some stronger winds in the afternoon in Germany, after carefully selecting airports with grass runways with marginal crosswind components we got stuck at our last fuel stop due to deteriorating weather at destination, we decided to wait it out and continue the next morning.

First thing I did the day after arriving was giving it some much needed TLC, a good and thorough washing.
From top to bottom, front to back. And polishing the belly to get rid of any remaining dirt, grease, oil, … And for being an almost 70 y/o aircraft, it looks really good all cleaned up. We then did some light maintenance and rectified some squawks we found during the pre-buy. I hope to have the paperwork of getting it N-reg’d done within the next couple of weeks so we can go into our first summer season together.

My father and I already have some ideas of modifications we’d like to do so it’ll be a ever changing aircraft and I can’t wait to get more familiar with it.

Looking forward to gathering more experience/opinions/ideas/… from this forum/association!

I wanted to attach a photo but unfortunately I don’t see the option to do so.

Flying in Europe can be magical but it also has it's limitations. I'm hoping to discover a new aspect to European Aviation with the 170.

How hard is it to find an Authorized Inspector in Belgium to annual your plane once you put it on U.S. registration?

Not incredibly hard, we have an A&P/IA at our home base, there are a fair amount of those around in Europe.
