Salvage yards/parts sources

Post by n2582d »

George,
Thanks for the new site. I really appreciate all the work you've done in making this a reality.

Would it be possible to compile a list of recommended sources for C-170 parts? Maybe it could be placed in The Hangar, The MX Library, or in a members-only area. The latter might encourage C-170 owners to join TIC170A. A list of recommended repair shops with C-170 experience might also be helpful.

Hi, Gary. Thanks for the good suggestion about compiling such a list.
The best thing about a discussion forum is the input from everyone who participates. (Another reason to encourage actual participation,...othewise the site becomes a one-way street (drain) of knowlege instead of a two-way sharing.)
If a member has a recommendation for services, parts, etc., then they could post it in the Hangar. But I'm a little reluctant to make a list per se, of places I'd personally recommend because as sure as I do then that place will let you down and you'd blame me.
If I have a good experience somewhere I'd rather tell everyone about it, but stop short of making a blanket recommendation unless I'm really confident they'll serve everyone consistently. You never know when a shop is sold or takes up a new technician that can ruin or improve a reputation.
As for restricting forum features to "encourage" non-members to join TIC170A, I'm reluctant to do that for the same reason. Participation is good for everyone, members and non-members alike. Requiring membership for features that monetarily benefit a participant (such as listing For Sale items, or Wanted items) makes sense because that is a benefit a dues-paying TIC170A member should receive from his/her Association. Yet opening that feature to anyone/everyone would expose the site to wholesale commercialism. We've already seen what that can do to a forum. :?
