Wheel pant mounting plate

Post by LEODON1 »

A friend of mine asked me to make a wheel pant backing plate for him. I have a pair of 172 mounting plates to work from however. I do not have a part number for the 170 mounting plate. I plan to use the periphery of the 172 plates but delete the cutouts and axle holes until I can orientate the wheels and then mark or transfer the holes from the 170 when it is properly aligned.
Would like to know what material the original plates are made from. I am having trouble finding detailed information on the Aluminum material used.

Matt Lahti makes replica mounting plates from carbon fiber. Price is $225/pair. His web address is http://www.lahtiaerospace.com/Wheel_Pants.html.

I do not have any documentation to support the suspicion that the original-style plates recently reproduced in the 90's by Cessna were made from 6061 aluminum plate. The originals mfr'd back in the 50's were likely 2017 alloy, as the engineering notes indicated "17S"... something I learned from a discussion with Cessna engineering back in 2007 when I was trying to find a speaker for the GLS convention, and that is what Spruce shows to be the modern equivalent of 2017. This info was scribbled into notes in my own aircraft records by an unknown person during restoration and confirmed on page 67 of the 2007 Spruce catalog, but I've been unable to locate the notes again. (I feel like "Kicking Bird" when he frantically searched for his pipe, to make a gift to "Dances with Wolves". )

Hi All,

Resurrecting and old thread. My '54 B model came with 2 sets of wheel pants, none installed. One is pictured below, which by the paint job must have been installed at one time but is not original 170. The second is an unpainted set of the Lahti carbon pants but no mounting plates (although receipts show the mounts were purchased with the pants).

Would love to install the Lahti ones but it seems there is no paperwork/337 (as mentioned elsewhere on the forum); tried to contact Matt Lahti but was wondering if he is still around/active or what my options might be.

Thanks,

Bob

Hi All,

A little more investigation, the Lahti wheel pants have a 337 form included, but for someone else's Cessna 140. I guess this might help in getting a FSDO approval.

Thanks,

You can get in contact with Matt on his cell at:

He said he had no issues with sharing his cell number when I spoke to him a few moths ago.

Hi All,

In my aircraft records are a receipt for the Lahti fairings and the mounting brackets.

With the aircraft came the fairings which are unpainted and unused.

On the aircraft are a set of mounting brackets:
Plate.jpg
The brackets mounted on my aircraft match up with the Lahti carbon fairings (including the mounting screw holes; the fairings in photo are not actually mounted, just checking fit):

but from the forum it seems there is a difference between the original mounts and the Lahti mounts? Are these original mounts?

Trying to see if I can get one off approval for these things since I already have them but trying to be sure I have a full understanding.

Any help/explanation appreciated!

Hope everyone is well,

Bob

Also,

Anyone guess what these aluminum wheel pants came off of? No ID/markings on them; they were clearly mounted on my aircraft previously.

There is a nice set of 140 wheel pants on Barnstormers for a cool $2000. I think they have been there for a while. These are the same part number as the 170 I believe.

Any idea if this means anything?

The 071?110 ... Is similar to the Cessna part-numbering system. (I’m told Cessna PNs are actually based upon drawing-numbers) An 04????? OR 03????? Or 05????? Would indicate a 170 possibility.

An 06????? Or 07????? Or 07????? Would indicate an L-19, 180, 182, 185, 205, 206..etc possibility.

However, keep in mind that some similarities and some super-cessions exist. And example might be a wing-rib which might be common to the 170A, 170B, 172, 182, 185, L-19, O-1, 188/Pawnee agricultural sprayer, etc etc. A backwards cross-reference is a bit of trouble, but the IPC of several models might list numerical-to-page/illustration in their indexes, if the PN were more clear/easily read.

Certainly wheel-fairings can be switched between multiple aircraft using the same tire-size, so that pant might fit a 170 or 172 or 182, or ... even if it were not factory-assembled OEM on such aircraft.

Hi George,

Thanks for that analysis. For these I am trying to find out who/what aircraft they might be useful to.

As you can tell from the above I have 2 sets of wheel pants, neither of which currently have an authorization to install. I would love to install original style ones.

I found a source that claims to have new PMA'd original spec aluminum wheel pants for $488 a piece but I am skeptical.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,
I think we can rule out the L-19. The only digits in the p/n that I can read clearly are at the front and back: 07XXXX0-19. The left hand wheel fairing on the C-182 s/n 51194 and on is p/n 0742410-19. (I'm having a hard making the fourth digit from the left look like a "2" in your photo ).This part number, 0742410-19, is shared by the early C-172's in the '56-'62 C-172 IPC except there it says "fairing-fiberglass". Are you sure yours is aluminum? Googling the p/n only seems to come up with pictures of fiberglass wheelpants.

Hi George,

First, you are right, fiberglass. They have several aluminum reinforcements/repairs.

My best read on the number stamped is:

0715110 19 (the 5 could be a 3, or almost any other digit)

N 150117

Thanks,
