Garmin Pilot App on an Android Device

Postby juredd1 » Wed Dec 18, 2013 7:03 pm

I searched a bit but found nothing recent thus this post.

I currently have an iPhone and I'm in the process of moving to an Android phone until I found out that ForeFlight does not and does not plan to support the Android device. So that kind of put a small kink in my plan. Do any of you use the Garmin Pilot App on an Android device? If so could you give me likes/dislikes and any comparison to ForeFlight if you have used it.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

I don't use it on an Android but I do use it ( and foreflight) on an iPhone.
I'm using ForeFlight less and less as Garmin's app is much more capable (IMO)

Now for the real question, Why would you switch from an iPhone to Android? Are you getting bored of things just working without issue

I'm just the opposite! I used Garmin and Foreflight both for a year to see which worked better for me. I like Foreflight much better, it has just what I need without all the extra stuff Garmin has that I don't need or want. Foreflight is straight forward and easy to use.

I was a Garmin user, then switched to ForeFlight for quite a while but the last Garmin update has me spending more time in that than ForeFlight.

FYI, Garmin Pilot on Android is a completely different code base than the apple version.
Which is why ForeFlight doesn't have an Android app. It's a whole separate product line to maintain.

The android Garmin app appears to be a few versions behind the apple Garmin app as their screen shots don't show the dynamically generated maps. The Android app seems to still rely on Sectional overlay and generic maps. (and this is a major feature that pushed me to Garmin)

Not to turn this into a FFlight vs Garmin thread as both have made a LOT of improvements in the last year so, if you're a fan of one or the other and haven't compared lately, go check out the competition.

Not sure if that comment has a bit of sarcasm in there or not but my experience with iPhones have not been all that glorious. Not that ForeFlight has not worked well for me on the iPhone it's just after several years or the iphone I was going to try something new, most co-workers that have made the switch are happy with the Android device. The issue is if I get the new Android device I'm stuck with it for at least a year and half so I am not sure I can pull the trigger on the Android device as much as I want to the mail thing I use the phone for is email, text, and ForeFlight.

I get why an app maker might not want to create an App for the Android devices but just figured there was enough of the market heading that way that ForeFlight would think it's worth it. So many other companies do. I failed to remember that I also bought the NFlightCam iPhone key so I'm throwing away quite a bit to switch.

It was a little sarcasm. I switched to Apple products a few years ago 'cuz I was tired of fiddling with computers.
I write software for a living. After 25 years of playing with computers, the last thing I want to do is spend an evening trying to get a printer to work or go find some driver to make my laptop talk to my phone.

Apple products 'just work'. And if they don't work,I take them to some teenager at the mall and they can figure it out how to make it work. I reboot my laptop every 4 months and my phone has never crashed on me.

I have not been so lucky, between mine and my wife's iPhone and an iPad we have lost everything on our devices 4 times for no good reason. Luckily twice we had recent backs to recover but two times we lost very precious pictures of our kids in there very early stages of life. Pretty frustrating and I know what backups are for but it shouldn't happen that often. Maybe it's just us that has that issue. I to used to work on PC for a living and now bigger server (UNIX, AIX flavor) so I get tired of trying to make Apples stuff work on my personnal time when I pay them good money for there product, so if Android is worse maybe I need to move back to my old Motorola Razer.

Typed this on mt iPhone so please forgive typos as my big fingers and the small keyboard don't jive to well.

I haven't used Garmins app, but I do use Avilution's products on my Android devices. I've flown a lot with AviationMap and it has always worked vey well. It's very similar to ForeFlight and does most, if not all, of what ForeFlight does. It costs me $4.95 per month. Highly recommended!

Happy New Year. I'm a newby with this organization. Waiting for my "new" 170 to have its paint finished. I have been away from aviation for while but couldn't stand the pain any longer.
New to"tablet navigation" and am using Android systems. Any advice on apps?

Thanks, JT

The best advice I can give you is wait until you are actively flying and at that point use the trial periods to try out all the different choices. They all do the same things but maybe a bit different and each one does somethings the others don't. I've used them all and there is not one of them I prefer over others with one exception. I prefer using my IPhone over my IPad Mini and not all the software will run on a IPhone so that eliminates a few software choices.

I'm almost glad I had to give up flying when I read all ths kind of stuff.
It kind of makes me wonder how in hell I ever got anyplace at all with only the totally non electronic the equipment I had. Even when I was flying a four engined air liner like the DC-6.
KeeeeRiste! I sure am getting old. I really do miss following the airway beacons and the four legged radio ranges.

Dick,

Did you b*tch like that when airway beacons graduated from bonfires to electric lights?

Miles,
I don't remember bitching too much, but I didnt like having to learn the sequence of the three character flashing morse code on the beacons. At my advanced age,I can still remember and recite "The Shooting Of Dan McGrew" and 'The Creamation Of Sam McGee", but I'm damed if I can remember that sequence.

hello all
i'm fresh back from oshkosh 2021
missed the storm wednesday night
as my daughter could not go until thursday morning
missed all the hot humid weather as well
left saturday morning
was fun to walk around and see where
other pilots were heading off to
was also fun to see what devices they used for flight planning etc.
most had i-phones
and it was cool when they put in my route
(i still use sectionals and my trusty garmin 95 gps!)
and showed me the weather along my route
it was vfr in the morning at 0700
and then turned ifr till about 1100
anyway
i told one guy, i'd use foreflight
if i could get it to work on my android
(Samsung S10)
and he told me that it does!?
is this true?
BTW, it was a very hazy trip back to Des Moines
visibility due to the smoke was miserable
take care
