If it's been some time since the gear leg has been out I'd recommend pulling the gear when you repaint just to get a good look at and properly clean and repaint the entire gear leg. Attached are two pictures of my early style gear leg. The pitting was deep enough to render the leg unairworthy. One can also clearly see the shot peening on the close-up.
