For anyone wanting the info a G-5 provides, plus more, and is having serious anxiety about cutting up an original panel/overlay (like me), Garmin is now making the GI-275 which fits into a 3-1/8" panel hole with no cutting. The GI-275 also can be configured to give much more info than the G-5 if desired. More expensive than a G-5 but also much more capable and configurable.
And, if Garmin ever gets around to certifying the GFC-500 autopilot in the 170 series, the GI-275 will provide the info to the GFC-500 by then.
The hits just keep on coming, don't blink , you may miss something!

Re: Garmin GI-275
I’ve been anxiously awaiting the Aerovonics (now uAvionix) AV-30 for just this reason. Would like better IFR capability and modern reliability without changing the original panel.
The Garmin is significantly more expensive but has name recognition and a reputation for fine products and support. Perhaps in time the price will get more competitive.
