Of little help but it sounds like you may not have lady legs but have HD legs.

I just looked at my '52 B with the early style legs. My legs measure .644 but I have 1/4 inch gap between the top of the leg and the casting. My castings are not worn. I'd be curious to know how wide the slot is in your outboard castings. You have verified that the legs are seated against the lower surface, not hanging up in the radius?

Thanks for the replies. Here's the latest, I went back and pulled the B leg out again. The Outboard Casting measures about .750 opening top to bottom. I verified everything was right and set ok. I put the B leg back in and verified it sits correctly. I had a second set of eyes looking at the situation as well to confirm the gaps and measurements .Then I went back to the basics:

Currently aircraft in Discussion 1950 C170A SN 19509 N5475C

Gear being installed was removed from 1955 C-170B N3598C S/N 26642
Stamped 5Y531

From TLGW
PN 0541118-2 and 0541118-3 sn 25612 and on
1. -2 is right and -3 is left
2. A dimple is used to support the brake line clip
3. The gear has a straight leading edge facing forward
4. The thickness is 11/16 but varies from .665 to .685
5. The inside dimension from the center of the upper bend to the narrow end is approx 34-1/2″
6. The narrowest point of the gear measured just above the axle attach boss is 1-1/2″
7. The gear comes straight out and down to the axle attach on a straight line, also referred to as wheels aft.
8. The weight is 29-30 lbs per leg.
Early Cessna 180 gear (used on 170’s)
PN 0741001-1, 0741001-2, 0741001-3, and 0741001-4
1. -1 and -3 are left and -2 and -4 are right
2. A dimple is used to support the brake line clip
3. The gear has a straight leading edge facing forward
4. The thickness is 11/16 but varies from .665 to .685
5. The inside dimension from the center of the upper bend to the narrow end is approx 36″
6. The narrowest point of the gear measured just above the axle attach boss is 1-7/8″
7. On the -1 and -2 the gear comes straight out and down to the axle attach on a straight line, also referred to as wheels aft.
8. On the -3 and -4 the gear comes out angled forward and down to the axle approx 2-3″ as compared to the -1 &-2, also referred to as wheels forward.
9. The weight is 32-33 lbs per leg.
All the gear have serial numbers. The 170 gear will have a letter followed by numbers like Z345 while the early 180 gear will have a letter number mix like 1Y345. Later years went to the 6 digit serial number like 801123 The serial numbers are on the end or the inside of the axle attach area.[/color]

Then I looked into the IPC's. Why are there 2 different part numbers, Is the B possibly bigger opening?
170A IPC
Fig 20-35 LH OUTBD Bracket 0511495-2 Measures about .750 opening

170B IPC
Fig.21-47 LH OUTBD Bracket 0713495-3 ???????????????????

Here are some pictures of the gear

So it fits well, just have a gap of .032 to .040 or so , which the factory wedges do not slide in to. They are about .080 at the forward edge.

I was trying to figure out who “TLGW” were… when I recognized the descriptions of the different legs… (We have had this info …and more…in our LIbrary since 2009: viewtopic.php?f=40&t=6367 ) …courtesy of Steve Knopp.

All the outboard gear bracket part numbers from the 170A through 185F all supersede to the same P/N. I will measure a later style casting when I get home this evening.

Thank you sir. I checked the manuals I had for superseded numbers but did not find any related to the PN's in question.
I appreciate your help and letting us know what you find .

Later bracket slot measures .875. I recommend some creativity with the wedges.

Thank you for the update and dimension. That certainly explains the situation and measurements. I'll take your recommendation and get it right and tight.

Wondering if anyone has seen gear installed with no shims needed, just the wedges. Looking at a 170B with early wheels forward 180 gear and wedges seem tight and not bottomed out but no shims installed. Thanks in advance. Aurele
