WTB 170B Project

Postby joe.lacharite » Fri Mar 10, 2023 1:34 pm

Looking for a 170B project! Anybody know of one? Just about any condition acceptable as long as it has good paperwork and mostly good bones. A "barn find" style project would be preferred. Panel/engine can be in any condition or missing. Thanks!

I don’t know where you are but there has been one sitting at the Kenai, Alaska airport for many years. I looked up the owner a couple of years ago with the intention of saving it and he wanted $12,000 at that time. It is complete except for the rudder but I don’t know anything else about it.

About a year ago I saw this C-170b which looked like it needed some TLC.

What is left of this is nothing but corrosion. The skins are falling off and the rivets are corroded away. I could not find anything worth $10 bucks on this complete piece of junk. The owner is a liar, he says he has started it every yr. It has not been run since at least 2008 that is when I came back to kenai. He wants 15 g's and says all it needs is a annual. The rudder corroded and blew off it in pieces over the years, and the owner says he removed it. Again he is a liar the hinges are still on the vertical.
Not worth your time to even consider it.

That is too bad the airplane was left to rot, I only saw it thru the fence and didn’t get close enough to see the faults, well, except for the missing rudder. At least now I know it was REALLY not worth it!

Richard, it is a shame many people have offered over the yrs to buy rebuild the bird. The owner has lost his mind. Very sad it could have been saved 15 yrs ago but definitely not now. Next time I'm over there I'll take a few shots and post them of what happens to a plane when left unflown sitting next to salt water.

I think this is the aircraft that I poked at Kenai about 15 years ago when we were driving around Alaska on a holiday . It was in a bad state then and the engine was SEIZED then .
Some one take a Photo of the interior . It’s “BAD” . No self respecting rat would live in it. on second thoughts the rubbish might have decomposed by now.

i’ve often thought that the reason some airplanes are allowed to sit until they are reduced to bauxite again is because as pilots age…they are unwilling to give up their self-image as pilots. We are an egotistical group, in that, flying airplanes is not simply “what we do”….. but we see airplanes as “Who We Are”.

I recently pointed out to one of our Members that we are supposed to “Preserve and Promote” this airplane…. and that ignoring our to the point of disintegration … fails to do that.

I hope I’ll let mine go to a new owner or heir before the airplane suffers. It’s what we do with what we Love.

Well, it appears I have found my candidate airplane for rebuild! Ill post more once I have the final details worked out, but it seems like I have finally found myself a great project. It will probably take a year or two to get it done, but itll be well worth the work.

Sad to see that one go. Glad it’ll be flying again, though.

Hey Joe
How about some details on your new 170? Where did you find it, what condition is it in, what are you going to do to it, etc, etc, etc?

Looks like Ole Gar is hanging up his spurs. Sad to see but guess we will all have to face those circumstances one day. Love this guy.

Hey! found it through another member of the association. At the moment, it has some heavy corrosion to address and the engine will need an overhaul or outright replacement. Its going to be headed to Grand Rapids, Michigan. The plan is for myself and my fiancee to basically repair the aircraft where needed, get it through an annual, and just have fun with it short term. Longer term, Ill make small upgrades here or there while still keeping the vintage look. The idea is to keep the looks original while incorporating some modern conveniences and safety. Ill be sure to keep everyone posted as i get to it!
