Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
Personally, I almost never use 8 pt sockets. So, if you envision more future uses for a 12 pt socket, a Craftsman 1-1/4 inch will work fine for this application, and can be had for $9.99 here:

That was an unbelievable oversight to omit the O-300-A engine from the applicability list. Great catch Pete.

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
Thanks Pete, for following up on that!
I have the CO-300 adapter on a '59 C-170C (aka C-172 ).
So they should have records of at least one O-300-A with the STC installed. Do you know what information Mr. Hanlin requests?

The 300 E must have a controllable pitch prop, the left one on Gary's picture of the Beagle B.218X appears feathered.

They’re discussing how Hot it is in that low-wing-greenhouse and how the “ball” is on the left side of the T&B indicator.

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
I too noted that the AD 2022-04-04 omitted the -A engine. Although the Stratus SB included it by using the verbiage “0-300 series”. The big problem with the omission is that when you do an AD report at annual inspection and type in 0-300A, it leaves the AD out of the report. A junior, un-knowing IA could easily skip over this serious matter easily. I emailed Mr. Hanlin with the FAA today and within an hour he replied with an apology and assurance there will be a revision to the AD.

The FAA goes to some lengths to see that there are-no “junior, unknowing” IA’s.snellbob wrote:I too noted that the AD 2022-04-04 omitted the -A engine. Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
According to my IA who just completed my annual you should comply with all the requirements of the AD (service bulletin) except replacing the gaskets if you have the copper gaskets installed, which I do. There’s the safety wire requirement, the 10-20 pound rotation test (shouldn’t move) and the marking requirement so any movement down the road is noticeable.mmcmillan2 wrote:Last year we complied with the SB by installing two copper washers. Now that this is an AD, do I need to do anything else?
If you complied with it last year and it hasn’t changed then I would think you’re ok.

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
I would like to clarify the orientation of the crush washer for the oil screen (not the filter adapter). SB96-7D states:
Oil Filter Screen (w/new crush
gasket. Install gasket w/parting
line against screen face.
I've seen comments in previous posts that the split should face the engine, but my interpretation (and my mechanics) is that it should be facing the screen bolt flange - since that's the screen itself, with the solid side going against the block flange.
Thanks, Laszlo

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
Laszlo,
Not sure if you're asking a question or making an observation. In any case, you are correct. Continental is the opposite of Lycoming. Lycoming says, "Install all crush type gaskets ... with the unbroken surface against the flange of the plug or part being tightened against the seal."

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
According to Tempest and supported by a pic…the split should face the sleeve (i.e., face forard) in both locations. (The aft AN900 split faces the sleeve, and the forward one….IF STILL INSTALLED…fhe split faces the engine.
Now comes AD 2022-04-04 AMOC….(Alternate Method of Compliance)…. which allows the Tempest “Improved PN: ST07 Gasket) to replace the AN900 against the engine. The New ST07 gasket is constructed of a stainless steel screen impregnated with PTFE which resists cutting, leaking, etc. and is approved to REPLACE the AN900 between the sleeve and the engine accy-case.

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
I’m hearing from my IA there is a new AD now calling for a different gasket again. I think it’s 2023 1704 but I can’t find anything yet. He tells me he’s getting it electronically but doesn’t have the complete info yet
You guys hear anything?

Thanks. New AD but no new work for those who have complied with the last one as far as I can tell

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD
I'd agree Rich. It looks like the FAA read this thread which shows they made several errors on the original AD like not including the O-300-A in the applicable engine list. This new AD also incorporates the new Tempest teflon gasket as an alternative to the copper AN 900 gasket. Previously, one had to comply with an AMOC to install the teflon gasket.
