Columbia, CA (O22) North/South Fly-In Sep 20-22, 2024

Post by darhymes »

Hello all California pilots! The North/South Fly-In will be held this year from September 20-22. I am keeping it pretty low-key this year, but if attendance is good I will add more activities in future years. For now, plan on enjoying Columbia’s excellent campground, historic downtown, and some good company.

Friday-Campfire (if the weather is cool enough) or outdoor movie-will let y’all decide

Saturday-Possible Fly-Out to some nearby unimproved airstrips-still working on details with a fellow Association member. Could be fun if you don’t mind getting some dirt on your wheels! I will post an update on the forum if the fly out is going to happen. There may be a video to watch and a form to sign before going.

Saturday evening-Meet for dinner at Columbia House Restaurant in downtown Columbia. Evening campfire back at the campground

If you haven’t been to the campground at Columbia, it is worth checking out! It is located adjacent to the grass runway and has plenty of space for camping and parking. The campground has good restroom facilities and showers. There is also an area to play horseshoes and many other amenities.

The historic town of Columbia is a short walk and has a lot to do and see in the downtown area. The stagecoach tour is a nice little excursion and there is even a playhouse in town that has shows during the weekend.

Last year, this fly-in was cancelled due to low clouds and rain. I will keep an eye on the weather and wildfires. Please refer to the TIC170A forum for updates or cancellations. There is no rain date for this fly-in!

Thanks for posting Dustin, this sounds great! Hopefully the weather cooperates this time around! Count us in as a definite maybe  due to some planned travel in the interim but should be able to firm up the plans in a few weeks.

Thanks for organizing this, Dustin. I'm putting this on the calendar for sure. We're sorry we missed it with the fluke weather last year. Please keep us posted on the flyout ideas. I flew out of Pine Mountain Lake (E45) for 17 years.

Saturday Fly-Out Information

Thanks to a fellow Association member, we will have a fly-out late Saturday morning (approximately 10am) to the nearby Red Hills airstrip. Once at the airstrip, we will have some sandwiches and refreshments in addition to a visit with the gracious owners of Red Hills, Jack and Myrna. This fly-out is optional but if you would like to attend, please complete the required Liability Waiver and watch the Safety Briefing Video. The links to both are below.

There will also be a safety briefing at the Columbia campground prior to departure on Saturday morning.

Safety Briefing Video: https://vimeo.com/390412439

If you would like to take part in the fly-out, please let me know via my email: darhymes2@gmail.com. This will help keep an accurate count of pilots flying into Red Hill. I am looking forward to seeing all of you soon!

Columbia N/S Fly-In Update

Post by darhymes »

The weather forecast looks good for the N/S Fly-In! I hope everyone is able to make it to Columbia to camp or just to stop in and visit for a while. Here are a few important items for anyone that is planning to attend:

If you will be joining us on the fly-out to Red Hills, please make sure you have watched the video and completed the waiver beforehand. Also, be sure to send me an email if you plan on flying into Red Hills so we can keep an accurate count of attendees.

Due to current fire restrictions, no fires will be permitted at the campsite.

I will bring along some tri-tip sandwiches (yum-yum!) for Saturday lunch. If anyone wants to join us for dinner on Saturday, we have reservations for 6pm at the Columbia House Restaurant in Downtown Columbia.

I am really looking forward to meeting many of you at the fly-in!

Thanks to everyone for keeping me updated with the arrivals. This is shaping up to be a pretty good gathering of 170s. There are a few things I neglected to mention...

-Camping is $10 per night which also includes tiedown fees. There is a payment kiosk and envelopes at the campground or you can pay using a QR code which I will have available at the campground. You can also pay here: https://tuolumnecounty.ca.gov/705/Colum ... Campground

-I have procured use of the campground pavilion which includes a full kitchen and some tables and chairs. Although I do not plan to use the facility for making meals, that does not preclude any of you from doing so. If you would like to use the refrigerator and kitchen amenities during your stay, you are more than welcome to do so. I will also bring along my coffee maker and plenty of grounds for anyone that enjoys a cup in the morning (or afternoon).

-If you are going to drive in, there is a gate on the Northwest side of the field that brings you to the campground. Please let me know via email (darhymes2@gmail.com) if you are planning to drive in and I will let you know the gate code.

That's about all (for now). I'm looking forward to visiting with many of you again and also meeting many of you for the first time!

This is the weekend I always spend in Reno watching fast airplanes turn left. A show I never miss, though it often conflicts with my wife's birthday. She knew the races were part of the deal when she married me. This year, no races. After 27 years of marriage, my wife wanted to spend her birthday at the beach this weekend and I couldn't say no.

I hope you all are having fun in Columbia.

Cheers,
Pete

The Columbia N/S Fly-In turned out to be a great event! Thanks to everyone that attended. I enjoyed meeting all of you.

A special thanks to Jack and Myrna for hosting us at their lovely home at Red Hills. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

There were many of you that could not attend this year’s fly-in…we missed you! I certainly hope you are able to make it to the next one (or another future fly-in).

This event had plenty to write about so I'll save that for the 170 News.

Until then, here are a few photos:
