Instrument restoration or just face and needles

Post by AWilson »

Looks like Mitchel Instruments in Pa is out of business. I need a source for getting my instruments restored. Gone through mechanically and then the faces and needles restored. Actually everything works except for the 8 day clock. But I am having that restored. So at a minimum I need the faces and needles restored. I don't want the tan face though. I want black. But the off white markings and needles I want done correctly in the right color.

Does anyone know how we can get this done now that Mitchel is out of business?

I had an original airspeed overhauled and refaced by Air Parts of Lock Haven a couple years ago. They did a great job! 12-16 weeks turnaround though. https://www.airpartsoflockhaven.com/flight-instruments

Here’s the before and after. I had them do “Cessna Brown”, but they offered black and white

Air Parts of Lock Haven is right next door to Keystone Instruments, an instrument shop that has been servicing, overhauling and restoring instruments for many many years. Could it be possible there are two such shops at the same airport within 100 ft of each other in PA?

I would and have sent my instruments to Keystone Instruments. http://keystoneinstruments.com/

In the past I have recommended Quality Aircraft Instruments in Wichita, KS for Instrument and clock overhauls/repairs and they still do great work EXCEPT they have no more bearings for the old-style AN-Gyros. I did not know that before I sent my D.G. to them and they informed me the bearings are on “backorder” with a six-month expectation.

So I had them forward the D.G. to Keystone who did the job and shipped them to me. Keystone is an excellent, old-line instrument shop who repairs and restores All Types of aircraft instruments.

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)

Five years ago I had my airspeed indicator overhauled, certified, and the face re-painted by Rudy Aircraft Instruments. They did an excellent job.
