A Member has asked about converting door latches to the 172 type, and was told the handles must be changed to the later, "Long" type handle.
This is not so, as can be seen in these photos of my door latch which has this modification.

Now that John Benham is gone I wonder what will happen to the STC?

Is that the basis of approval? *grin*
Seriously, it was by John Benham's STC? Thanks for the pictures, George.

They are original 172!!blueldr wrote:George,

I can't imagine that this is anything more than a minor alteration, even in the eyes of a persnickety inspector, and shouldn't need any STC. It uses genuine Cessna parts from aircraft with doors that are even interchangeable, on models that are approved for flight without doors. It is a much more secure method of latching a door, although a door which opens in flight is a non-event.
At least one airplane I know has 172 doors as replacement doors, and the necessary doorpost alteration on a 337. That airplane was approved for re-entry/conformity by FAA.

OBTW: Whom ever attacks this type of project should keep in mind when altering the rear door post to accept the clutch that: You are altering the rear door post which the rear wing spar attaches and supports "You" in flight. It is subjected to a lot of stress, thus you should not remove any more material than needed and all corners should be radioused to relieve any potential for stress cracking. Later model Cessna models have been " Beefed up" the area around the opening. This should be a tip off that the Cessna engineers have seen the potential for problems with either with "G" loading or twisting stresses when flaps are applied. They also added a striker plate on the outside to protect that area from damage when closing the door.

I wasn't doubting the STCs existence. (I know about John D's STC, and have inspected the "kits" of salvaged parts he had for sale in ziplok bags kept in his hangar.) I was only expressing a personal opinion that converting a 170 to 172 door latches is a minor alteration.hilltop170 wrote:Don't take my word for it, look it up: SA3866SW
