Tailwheel Track

Post by LouLaSalle »

We currently have a steel tailwheel track in the hangar that we rent at Alexandria Field. We are moving to a house with a hangar on a private airport and are looking for a similar track. Does anyone know what this is called and where we could get one? Thanks. Lou and Pat La Salle

I'm pretty sure I know what you mean. It's probably just a piece of steel channel. You should be able to get something similar at or thru your local building supply outfit. They should at least be able to steer you to a supplier. Take a measurement of the width & depth of the channel, as well as the length required.

Lou you could make or have one made out of 2 pieces of angle iron.

Where you are you moving. I'll have to drop in some time when I'm trying to have engine trouble over NJ.

I painted a yellow line down the center of my T hangar and pulll the airplane in and push it out following that line, using a tailwheel tow bar.
I'm not sure a track would make it any easier.

I also have a line painted down the center of my hanger and use a tailwheel towbar. This actually works better than a track because if your airplane is not centered outside the door, you can cross the line while pulling the plane and by the time the wings get to the door it will be centered and you can then pull along the line the rest of the way into the hanger. Works good for me.

Ditto harold's comments. I don't see what advantages a track for the tailwheel would have. Unless you were maybe winching the airplane backwards into the hangar. Even then the benefit (to me) seems dubious.

In addition to the painted line for the tailwheel I have one for each main gear. That helps to check that the mains are about where they should be when bringing it in. I painted a square where each wheel sits that helped when I used movable chocks. I decided to epoxy in some of those long nuts used to add to allthread and have angle iron chocks now bolted in the correct places. I no longer have to chase chocks and can unbolt them for the Summer when I rent my hangar out.
