antique versus classic
When does an airplane change from a "classic" to an "antique"?

When Saint Poberezny wants it to. As far as I know most classics were made after WWII while most Antiques were made before WWII. Exceptions were made for the last of the Staggerwing Beechcraft made after the war and I believe some of the 46 Fairchild 24's These are the rules as I understand from the EAA. As things stand now our 170s will never be antiques. One of my pet peeves is how they let more and more planes into the contemporay catagory each year and never want to move the older classics into a better catogory as far as parking. While I am an EAA member who thinks they have done a lot of good I do feel that the organization should be run in a more democratic fashion. Bill K

Thanks for the information Bill and Doug. I was under the impression as I believe a lot of people are, that it becomes an antique after a certain number of years, much like cars. Now I know and thanks again.

I too am an EAA member, but who put EAA in charge of deciding what aircraft fit into what categories except at EAA events?

Re: Antique vs Classic
You're right, Frank. The EAA (VAA) only controls its own events.170C wrote:I too am an EAA member, but who put EAA in charge of deciding what aircraft fit into what categories except at EAA events?
The Antique Airplane Association (http://aaa-apm.org/info/whatis.html) defines these categories:
Pioneer Period 1903 - 1914
World War I Period 1914 - 1918
Antique or Golden Age 1919-1936
Classic 1936 - 1942
World War II 1940 - 1945
Neo-Classic 1946 - 1950

Wellllll aawwwwrrrrriiiiigggghhthhhhhttttttyyyyyyyyy then!!
As a psuedo-expert of The Int'l Cessna 170 Association, I propose that OUR organization declare that all airplanes with round tail-feathers manufactured prior to that mfr's introduction of tricycle landing gear configurations be identified as Antiques!
Airplanes mfr'd with tricycle gears during that time Elvis spent in Germany be Classic! , and those airplanes with tricycle gear and/or all airplanes made with plastic body-parts since Elvis died be declared JUNK!!!!
