Is it only the straight 170s and the A models that have the fully opening 2 door access on the top of the cowling?

No. The '52 B models had it as well. The change to the pressure cowl didn't happen until the 1953 model year (don't have my IPC handy to give you the serial number for the changeover).

The 1952 model year was also the last year for the "old" instrument panel style.
