Some 170s have a nice thick dash, or glare shield. Can you order those somewhere?

You might try Robert Schroers, retired Boeing craftsman. (425) 746-9790. He made them, with recessed lights and has spare bulbs.

My STC'd deck and glareshield is from Aircraft Design Service Co., STC# SA152NW, with lites.

There are numerous sources for the glare shields as you have seen on these posts. The guy who did my interior added some fore/aft length to my shield when he redid my interior. No lights in it, but it is more padded, expecially at the aft end (facing the pilot). In my opinion I think it looks better than the original, but thats a personal opinion as I said. If done the way mine was done it is inexpensive.

Would you mind giving some more details on your glare shield? It sounds like what I had in mind. I would like one that extends back far enough to block glare and hide instument lights but is also padded and upholstered to match my interior.

As I recall both my '56 172 & 170's had no shield extending aft from the instrument panel. It was flush. I believe what my interior person did was to take a piece of aluminum and cover it with a fairly thick, black vinyl type material which then also covers the entire glare shield forward to the windshield. It extends out past the edge of the instrument panel about 3 inches as I recall. This does provide some shade over the instrument panel. I don't know exactly how he did this as I didn't see it while being constructed. It attaches to the original glare shield with a couple of screws and has an opening for the defroster outlet on the pilots side. If more detail is needed let me know and I can measure the next time I am at the hangar.

IOWA, that last line of your post decribes my perpetual state of existence. I don't suffer from ignorance, I'm starting to enjoy it!

170C, that sounds like what I need to do. Maybe I can locate a used fiberglass unit and then cover it to match my interior. The padded edge you mentioned would be a nice safety touch though.

If you cut out a glareshield, and use velcro to attach it to the original coaming...it is removeable equipment and no documentation is req'd.
