Flap Rollers, Bushings, etc.

Post by Robert Eilers »

I am considering replacing my flap rollers and bushings with new. My examination of the flaps looks like I can probably accomplish the change out without removing the flap. Anyone have experience with cahnging the flap rollers and bushings?

You are correct...it's not difficult. Just be certain your brackets are not out of spec. The McFarlane units are good product.

There is a discussion of this at:

The hardest part is installing the rear roller bolts thru the little 2 inch holes on top of the flaps.

Seems to me that a real looooong 1/4" drive extension came in real handy.

Thanks for the McFarlane tip. I would have gone through Aircraft Spruce orering each separate part from them. I noticed the McFarlane kit does not include replace AN hardware - AN3-10A (bolt) AN365-1032 (nut). Is it necessary to orer the hardware separately or do the bolts seldom need replacement?

Ask McFarlane if they'll supply the hdwr, otherwise simply replace it with new. (I'd hate to do the disassembly work and not replace those relatively inexpensive bolts..... you'll have done the majority of the labor already.)

OK - nothing is as simple as it seems. I received the McFarlane flap roller kit (great kit by the way) and the Service bulletin regarding the double washer fix for the outboard, forward roller. The Service Bulleint specifies installed to washers on one side of the roller to fix or reduce the wear on the arm. However, I found the SB confusing. I found it difficult to determine from the SB drawings and instructions which side the double washer should go on.

The drawing suggest the double washers should go on the inside or inboard side of the roller on the outboard, forward roller of the left wing. But, using the same drawing and instructions it would appear that the double washers should go on the outboard side of the roller on the outboard, forward roller of the right wing. This didn't make sense to me. So I intuitively placed the double washers on the inboard side of the right wing outboard, forward roller as well.
