Tail Spring Squeak

Post by Robert Eilers »

My tailwheel spring has developed a distinctive squeak. The squeak is located at the top of the assembly. I can cause the squeak by placing my foot on the tailwheel and rotating it forward. The squeak can be heard when taxing. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I have checked nuts/bolts for correct torque.

A little spray grease/oil may help. There is always metal to metal between the leafs, so I found lubrication to help.
If not a mouse trap placed near the tail wheel may solve the squeak!

Hi,

Your plane does not leak enough oil.

I had a squeaky TW spring too. I doused it good with LPS2. The mouse must have died from the fumes.........

Sleeping Bag

Sometimes, metal squeaks when it is loose, I'm sure you have checked the torque on the main bolt that secure the springs to the plane and the one that secures the spring to the tailwheel assembly, and the U bolt. Another example, Squeaky wing spar bolts, need more than lube. It shouldn't squeak, if it's secure.

Yes, Check for loose bolts, mine came loose this summer and produced some shimmy, and squeaking...
